Direction A

Flat Daylight: the specification

The build document for this direction. Everything a builder needs and nothing needed to choose.

What is in here

The eleven elements of this direction written out in full, the fifteen layers of the system contract, the working behind each thing choosing it commits you to, and the record of where every fact came from. None of it is needed to pick a direction, which is why it is here and not on the page you choose from.

The eleven elements of this direction

The twelfth, the category field, is the same sheet for all three, so it sits on the overview page rather than in here.

6.1 The reference pile
nameoutside industrytakenot takewhere
Penguin Books tri band paperback, 1935, cover scheme by Edward YoungyesThe flat field is the carrier of the words and the words never sit on the picture. Type lives on one colour, so legibility is a property of the field rather than of whatever the photograph happens to be doing. The three band symmetry, the colour coded genres and the centred setting. There is no drawn band here at all: the whole sheet is the field, the photograph is an object inset in it with daylight on all four sides, and each line of type starts a step further right than the one above it rather than sitting flush.OURS
UK local direction sign, black on white, Transport alphabet by Jock Kinneir and Margaret Calvert, Worboys Report 1963yesA flat pale panel with black type, no gradient, no shadow, no outline, designed to be read at speed and at distance by someone who is not trying. That is the same job a grid tile has at 300px.The typeface itself, the arrow vocabulary and the rounded corners. Transport is a road face with open forms for glancing; this direction needs a heavy grotesque that holds a line on its own against a lot of empty daylight.OURS
Rineke Dijkstra, Beach Portraits, 1992 to 1996yesFrontal, eye level, flat daylight on a person who has not decided what face to make yet. It is the picture of somebody caught between two versions of himself, which is exactly who the buyer is.The large format formality, the empty horizon and the full length distance. You are framed shoulders to mid thigh and the room you are in stays in the frame.OURS
Martin Parr, The Last Resort, 1986yesBritish daylight that does not flatter anybody, in ordinary places, treated as worth photographing. Permission for a paving slab, a plastic tub and a kitchen counter to be the set.The saturated flash, the satire and the crowd. Nothing here is looking down on the subject, and no unconsented face enters a frame.OURS
Wisden Cricketers' Almanack cover, the yellow jacket with plain type, unchanged in structure since 1938yesOne flat ground that never changes, year after year, with the type simply sitting on it. The recognition comes from the ground being the same, not from an image. The yellow and the woodcut. The absence of photography is only half rejected: eight of the twelve grid tiles set a photograph into the ground and four are the ground alone.OURS
Fish Tank, Andrea Arnold, 2009yesAvailable light in an ordinary British interior, faces lit by whatever the window gives, and a body that is not lit for beauty. Proof that flat domestic light reads as truthful rather than cheap. The handheld camera, the 4:3 crop and the misery register. Your frames are still, level and often funny.OURS
@munzfitness, one of the two brightest grids in the category, 316,631 followersnoProof that a bright grid survives in this category at the top of it. Measured at 118.6 mean sRGB value against a category median of 82, a fraction behind tylerjamessfit at 118.8, and it is the largest in category account in the set.The green screen cut out of his own face pasted into another man's clip, the platform's own caption furniture as the hook, and the bare torso on eight of twelve. His lightness is an accident of shooting video; this one is a decision. The category sheet, section 2.2, plus my own measurement of the twelve post covers of each of the thirteen accounts, 12 September. Not the composite grid images, which are a different artefact and give 86.7 for munzfitness where its covers give 118.6
@niallkiddle, named unprompted by your own paying clientyesNatural light on an unposed person with small quiet overlay type, and no black anywhere. This is the only direct evidence in the file about what the buyer's eye actually accepts, and it is not the category uniform. The warm film grade, the centred serif line and the countryside lyricism. This direction is ungraded and flush left. The evidence digest, section 5, buyer n=1
@andy_onlinecoach, the tightest designed card system among the small accountsnoOne structural signal repeated on every card, in his case a thin orange rule along the top edge of the panel. It proves a single drawn line can be the thing a stranger points at.Everything else, deliberately. The black card, the orange, the accusing question headline and the badge in the corner are the four things this direction's clause contradicts. The category sheet, section 2.2
Your own tile 07, the one tile you have built the category waynoProof you can hold a single type treatment across a whole tile when you decide to. It is the only one of your twelve with one headline face, one ground and a mark in a corner. The black ground, the result with a time span written on it and the client photograph in a ring. The line on it also carries a client result, which the locked words forbid anywhere near these mocks.Your own tile 07, named in the look sheet section 5

rejected decision
Shooting the relaunch piece at golden hour. It is the obvious beautiful reading of out of the dark and every designer reaches for it: you walking out of a doorway into low warm sun, long shadow, rim light on the shoulders. It is rejected because it serves neither word. Golden hour is flattering light and it is cinema, and the light you actually walked out into at 10am in July was flat, high and unkind. The same rejection kills the ring light, the graded LUT, and the dusk shoot at the ice tub, which is visually the most seductive frame you own.
6.3 The size of the departure
category default
Tiles built around text sit on a black or near black ground, measured between #0C0C0C and #242424, with the headline in white.
deviation
No word is ever printed on black. Every word sits in near black type on a flat daylight sheet, so your tiles are the light ones in a black category feed.
clause
Eight of the thirteen accounts in this niche print their words on a flat black ground; you never print a word on black at all, every word sits in near black type on a flat daylight sheet. Everything else stays conventional: heavy grotesque headline, exactly one saturated accent word, your name small in a corner, the before and after pair kept, the captioned talking head kept, with the captions moved off the man's face and onto the daylight under him.

6.4 The one thing that repeats

The stepThe device is an offset rather than a drawn object: every block of type starts one step further right than the block above it, so the left edge of a surface is a staircase cut into daylight. Nothing is added to the board to make it, which is why it survives a system whose first rules are that nothing bleeds and nothing is boxed.

How it is drawn

MeasureValue
step4 percent of the board width, which is 4cqw and 43.2px on a 1080 board and 12px at the 300px a grid tile is served. On a page it is 0.75rem. Both bases are carried by --a-step in src/components/dirs/a/system.css, so one name holds on a board and on a page.
half step2 percent of the board width, and it exists for one object. The quest ladder has six bands and six full steps would spend 20 percent of the board on indent alone.
countFour steps, then a reset to flush left. Past four the indent eats more width than the staircase earns.
originSteps are counted from the sheet margin, 7 percent of the board width, never from the board edge. The staircase stands inside the daylight and never enters it.
the footThe last block of a surface is never stepped. The staircase always ends on a flush line, which is what stops it reading as a slide into nowhere.
  • When something collides with it: The step never carries type onto a photograph, because no type sits on a photograph in this direction at all. The window is not stepped: measured on 13 September, no .a-window in any component under src/components/dirs/a/ carries a step class, so a picture sits flush inside the margin and the staircase runs beside it rather than across it.
  • With the colour taken off: One step is 12px at the 300px a grid tile is served and four of them are a 48px staircase. It is a silhouette rather than a colour, which is why it is the one thing in this direction that survives the desaturation test.

The archive half of this standard, and why it is recorded as failed

Read this against the step, which is the thing this direction repeats. The block around this note describes a bar across the bottom of every frame, and nothing has drawn that since the rebuild of 13 September; layer 5 records it as history. Element 6.4 wants the same element in the oldest published pieces and the newest. The step is new and the relaunch scope forbids deleting posts, so that half of the standard fails by construction and is recorded as failed rather than scored as a pass. What can pass, and when: the visible grid half. Your visible twelve is a pinned header plus the latest nine, so once nine consecutive pieces carry the step and the pinned cover is the tenth, a stranger shown the grid points at the same thing in ten of twelve. At three pieces a week that is 21 days of posting after the first stepped piece, and no earlier. No calendar date can be written here because the relaunch date is not on record. The second half has no date at all: it would require the step to be present in an archive of 1,234 posts as of 11 September 2026, which is the live profile count on that capture rather than the scraped corpus of 1,194 that direction C quotes, which only deleting the archive could achieve, and deleting is out of scope.

6.5 The colour set

8 neutrals and 4 steps of green. Every value below is the one the boards render from, so this list cannot disagree with the pictures above it.

The neutrals

  • n0 #FAF9F5 L* 97.9 the lifted sheet, a card standing off the page
  • n1 #E7E8E3 L* 91.8 page ground. The one measured departure in the whole set, because nothing in the thirteen category grids runs a pale ground
  • n2 #D5D7CF L* 85.6 the recessed well a photograph sits in, and the second surface on a dense board
  • n3 #B2B5AB L* 73.2 disabled fill and disabled ink
  • n4 #787C72 L* 51.4 the field edge, and the only border in the system. Chosen at 3.46 against the ground so a form field boundary clears the 3 to 1 a non text boundary needs
  • n5 #5E6360 L* 41.5 muted ink: labels, counters and captions
  • n6 #2C302C L* 19.4 body ink, for running copy and list items
  • n7 #0F1216 L* 5.3 display ink, for every headline and every numeral that is not the accent

The accent, green

  • a0 #DCEAE0 L* 91.4 the wash behind a single word in a headline, and nothing else
  • a1 #00732F L* 41.9 the accent. The one saturated value in the system: the call to action fill, the quest numeral, the focus ring
  • a2 #005C24 L* 33.5 the accent hovered
  • a3 #00421C L* 23.6 the accent pressed, and the done state

What each colour is for

RoleStepValueWhat it does
ground n1 #E7E8E3 page ground. The one measured departure in the whole set, because nothing in the thirteen category grids runs a pale ground
groundRaised n0 #FAF9F5 the lifted sheet, a card standing off the page

inkMuted n5 #5E6360 muted ink: labels, counters and captions
hairline n4 #787C72 the field edge, and the only border in the system. Chosen at 3.46 against the ground so a form field boundary clears the 3 to 1 a non text boundary needs
accent a1 #00732F the accent. The one saturated value in the system: the call to action fill, the quest numeral, the focus ring
accentInk n0 #FAF9F5 the lifted sheet, a card standing off the page
done a3 #00421C the accent pressed, and the done state
focus a1 #00732F the accent. The one saturated value in the system: the call to action fill, the quest numeral, the focus ring
disabled n3 #B2B5AB disabled fill and disabled ink

A role names a step, never a value, so moving the ink one step darker is one edit and every surface follows.

n1 #E7E8E3 a1 #00732F 4.88:1 16px, weight 500 the page ground sitting on the accent, where a control has to match the sheet it came from
n7 #0F1216 a1 #00732F 3.12:1 28px, weight 700 a display word sitting on the accent, and only at 28px and above. Below that it is illegal

Which pairs are forbidden, and why

TypeOnContrastWhy it is out
n5 n2 4.21:1 muted ink on the recessed well. It is the obvious move for a caption sitting under a photograph and it misses 4.5. Use the body ink
n4 n1 3.46:1 the field edge used as text. That step exists to give a form field a boundary at the 3 to 1 a boundary needs, and it is not a reading colour
n3 n1 1.69:1 the disabled step used as text. Disabled is a state, not a grey
n2 n1 1.18:1 the recessed surface used as ink
n5 a1 1.02:1 muted ink on the accent. All but invisible, and it is the obvious move the moment a label on a button is demoted
n4 a1 1.41:1 the field edge on the accent, which is the same mistake one step lighter
n0 a0 1.18:1 the lifted sheet on the wash. The wash sits behind ink and never behind a surface colour, which is the rule Say Briefly states as do not use the highlighter as a button fill

Distance from the colours already in your category: the nearest of the ten accents sampled from thirteen competing grids is #39BB23 (green, intellectual.muscle), and this accent sits dE76 43.5 from it.

6.6 The two typefaces

Two families and 9 styles. Every number below is the one the boards render from, so this list cannot disagree with the pictures above it.

Work Sans display

weights 700, 800. Licence OFL. Fontsource

Never below 44px at 1080 and never below 18px on the page. Below that the 800 weight closes its counters, which is the floor Dayos ee403055 writes for its own condensed face.

The scale

StyleFamilyOn a 1080 boardOn the page WeightLeadingTrackingCaseWhat it is for
display display 132px 64px 800 0.98 -0.02em sentence the cover headline and the landing hero, set in sentence case and stepped
headline display 100px 46px 800 1.02 -0.015em sentence the same headline when the hook is too long to hold at display. The system demotes one step rather than breaking a word
title display 76px 34px 700 1.08 -0.01em sentence a slide opener, a section head on the page, the title of a card
numeral display 120px 44px 800 1 -0.01em sentence the quest number. Seventeen of them exist in copy.json and they are the only recurring numerals the brand has
lead text 50px 22px 400 1.4 0 sentence the standfirst under a headline and a pull line inside a stack
item text 44px 18px 500 1.35 0.005em sentence one line of a list: a quest, a rule, a baseline item, a band name
body text 38px 17px 400 1.55 0.002em sentence running copy. The longest carousel body in copy.json runs past 200 characters and this style carries it
label text 30px 13px 500 1.2 0.14em upper the eyebrow, the counter, the band label and the handle. The only place capitals appear
caption text 26px 12px 400 1.35 0.04em sentence a note under a figure, and the annotation on a safe band

Scale ratio 1.32. Two families, and the pairing is inverted against every earlier version of this direction. Work Sans carries the display and Archivo carries the text, so A shares no display face with the other two directions. Case is the loudest separation: A is sentence case with the full stop kept, exactly as copy.json writes it, against seven of thirteen category accounts in heavy uppercase. The scale is binary rather than continuous, which is how GSAP 00537a20 and Dayos ee403055 both resolve it: a display band of 132, 100 and 76 at a ratio of 1.32, and a text band of 50, 44, 38, 30 and 26 at about 1.14, with nothing between them. The gap between 76 and 50 is the gap between the two faces and it is deliberate. The old build had no intermediate step at all, which is why every section on the landing page was the same shape.

The floors

  • On a tile: nothing below 30px at the 1080 board.
  • On the page: nothing below 16px.
  • Measure: no line longer than 66 characters.

The smallest style permitted on a tile is the label at 30px, which is 8.3px when the tile is served at the 300px Instagram gives a grid cell. That is a counter and an eyebrow, never reading matter. The smallest reading style on a tile is item at 44px, which is 12.2px at 300 and holds its counters in Archivo 500. Nothing below label appears on a tile at all.

The back garden in BamptonCotswold stone wall, timber fence, yellow paving, the black inflatable ice tub, and a wooden pergola carrying a string of bulb lights. The pergola is plainly there in DUnKB73jGmY, which the picture bank holds as evidence for a place rather than as a frame to use. That frame carries the pergola with its string of bulb lights, the stone wall, the timber fence, the yellow paving, the tub and the white frame at the right edge, all at once. It can never sit on a mock, for two reasons and not one: you are in an open towel and swim shorts, and the frame also carries three burned-in purple captions running to five lines. Whether the white frame at the right is a door or a window is not settled by this crop. You are dressed and standing, or the tub is alone.Your own property, weekly, no booking, thirty seconds from the kitchen, and already the set of the biggest reel you have ever made, DUnKB73jGmY at 312,186 plays against 15,365 for the next highest. Neither frame in the evidence list is that reel: DEcbTukNcoC is 2,236 plays and rank 30 of your videos, and DUx4nVEDgLO is a sidecar with no plays at allDEcbTukNcoC, DUx4nVEDgLOno
Your gym floorThe dumbbell rack, the mirrored wall, the benches. The room is dim, not bright: the five banked frames, DFx0YKAKp6g, DYt57JzCCYw, DEpyIQoKsye, DDmFdShqWgh and DBofsJNq2FO, measure 44.6, 52.8, 55.3, 74.8 and 81.6 mean sRGB value, with green LED strips along the mirrored wall on two of the five. There is no blue strip: one frame has a blue-lit pillar and another blue-painted doors and lockers. The words sit on daylight underneath the picture either way, so a dim room never costs you a legible line. You are there several times a week anyway. Filming permission is not on record and the gym's name is not on record either. One tile of the twelve carries a frame from this room, tile 03DYt57JzCCYw, DBofsJNq2FO, DDmFdShqWgh, DFx0YKAKp6g, DEpyIQoKsyeno
Home in the morning, the bookshelf alcove and the back door onto the gardenThe white alcove with book spines behind you, the patio door with the curtains open, the counter with coffee on it. Your documented morning routine set.Free, indoors, and the only set that survives a British winter, which matters because weekday daylight belongs to the RAF until February 2027. Six frames you own are in this alcove, ranking 3, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 14 of the 24 by brightness, so they are its upper half and not its brightest: the two brightest you own, DGspfjGKMhn at 183.3 and DQcN5SXiGJn at 149.3, are somewhere else. The evidence list below is right for this place and wrong for the alcove: it carries the back door frame DKT6579KRxN at rank 12, which is the other half of the place rather than the alcove, and the cafe tray DIYmC3jq13y at rank 6, which is neither. Measured over all 24 frames on 12 September, the same bookcase with the same scalloped top, the same graduation plaque and the same belt above it stands behind you in DCzbp_uNftC, DQUf4JUiHvT, DC7KAF9N0o9, DQrsBvziAiw, DFazV-AKfZb and DP4Eeq9CJgN. DQrsBvziAiw at rank 11 is the sixth and this entry does not cite it. Only DKT6579KRxN of the seven cited below is clean in this file's own sense of carrying no third party mark; the other six all carry oneDC7KAF9N0o9, DQUf4JUiHvT, DP4Eeq9CJgN, DFazV-AKfZb, DCzbp_uNftC, DKT6579KRxN, DIYmC3jq13yno
6.8 The picture kit
session
One morning at home and in the garden, both sets in one walk, plus half an hour at the gym the same day. Phone on a cheap tripod at eye level, no ring light, no grade. Overcast is the preferred weather, not the fallback.
shots
  • use: headshot, brief: One square frame, head and shoulders filling about seventy percent of it, camera at eye level, glasses on, daylight from a window or a flat overcast sky, plain wall or the stone wall behind, not smiling for the camera, no hands in frame, no third party wordmark on the chest. This is the file the profile photo is cut from., stand in: DEXmnZDNVNC, why stand in is not enough: It is a 1080 by 1917 phone frame grabbed from a reel and shot at arm's length slightly above eye level, so a square crop leaves a lot of blue sky above you and puts your shoulders on the bottom edge rather than filling seventy percent of the square. A small black clip-on device sits on the collar, with no wordmark on it at any magnification. DEXmnZDNVNC is the cleanest frontal frame in the picked bank and still not a frame shot for this purpose. Whether its square crop survives 64px has not been measured.
  • use: expression, brief: Explaining, both hands open at chest height, mid sentence, looking at the lens. Framed wide enough that the hands stay inside the frame., stand in: DQUf4JUiHvT, why stand in is not enough: Your arms crop at the frame edges, so nothing can sit beside you, and it is shot at the bookshelf with a WWE belt on the shelf above your head.
  • use: expression, brief: Making a hard point, one hand, mouth closed at the end of the sentence rather than in the middle of it., stand in: DP4Eeq9CJgN, why stand in is not enough: Both index fingers are up and your mouth is in an O mid word, which reads as surprise rather than emphasis once it is frozen on a cover.
  • use: expression, brief: Funny about yourself. The comments come when you laugh at your own expense, so one frame has to be you doing that, and it has to be about you rather than about a prop., stand in: DJUdlBpKFrg, why stand in is not enough: The dandelion covers your chin, the focus is soft, and the joke belongs to the flower rather than to you.
  • use: expression, brief: Deadpan, listening, eyes on the lens, no gesture. The frame the serious slides use., stand in: DSpVFHTiGyj, why stand in is not enough: A cartoon Santa jumper dates the frame to December and pulls the eye straight off your face.
  • use: wide, brief: The garden, shot square on: stone wall, fence, yellow paving, the tub, you standing dressed and still, framed so the top 1050px of a 1080 by 1350 crop works on its own., stand in: DEcbTukNcoC, why stand in is not enough: Snow on the ground, a novelty avocado dressing gown, patterned Crocs and a thrown snowball, and the two tag passes disagree about whether you have your glasses on.
  • use: wide, brief: The gym floor from the entrance, you walking in, glasses on, clothed, no headphones of any kind in the frame., stand in: DFx0YKAKp6g, why stand in is not enough: You are wearing AirPods, which contradicts the first of your own four non negotiables on a grid that prints it. The frame also measures 44.6 of 255, the darkest thing you own of yourself, which is the one part of the old 46.1 that held, and carries black letterbox bars from the reel export.
  • use: cutout, brief: Against the plain white wall at home, standing, clothed, arms down or one hand in a pocket, feet in frame, so you can be cut out and set on the daylight ground., stand in: DGspfjGKMhn, why stand in is not enough: The background is right and the separation is clean, but you are flexing a bicep in a sponsored football shirt, which is the exact pose this direction rejects, and the ESSAR sponsor block, the club crest and the MILLS mark are three third party marks across the chest of a half body frame, which no crop removes without losing the man. It is therefore not placed on a tile. Neither is DFazV-AKfZb, which used to stand at tile 11 in its place: the rebuilt grid runs neither of them.
gaps
  • No square frame exists at all. Every one of the 24 banked frames is 9:16 or 4:5, pulled from a reel or a post.
  • No frame is shot at eye level. The selfies sit above eye level and the gym frames were taken by somebody else at an angle.
  • Nothing exists in the house between 07:00 and 10:00 with the curtains open except DKT6579KRxN, where you face away and a script Good Morning lockup is burned across the middle of the frame.
  • No restaged before and after pair exists, of you or of anyone else, and no written consent is recorded for any of the roughly ten client pairs. The category's proof mechanic therefore cannot be mocked at all.
  • The 2017 direct flash photograph of the young skinny you, which the roots run wanted as the one piece of real night in the system, is in hand and is correctly kept out of the picture bank. What we have is the published frame, and it carries burned in violet overlay type reading I used to be the skinny guy. straight across the middle of the torso. A crop that takes the type out also takes out the torso the picture exists for, so this cannot be cropped around: the untyped original has to be found, or the frame stays unused.
  • No frame shows a quest actually happening in the real world, which is the thing the method sells. The grid borrows two outdoor talking heads, the home office alcove and the patio door to stand in for it: 06 is you speaking to the lens with trees behind you and 07 is the same against an overcast sky, 09 is your torso and both hands in the alcove with the shelf reduced to a pale sliver at the left edge, and 10 is you backlit holding the back door open. Those are the rendered positions, 01 to 12; this entry used to number the same four 05, 06, 08 and 09 on the previous grid. The coffee frame DIYmC3jq13y stands on no tile and no slide in this direction, having been swapped off for DPzAJBgCCXd because its Caffe Nero wordmarks are the subject of the frame rather than incidental to it, and the bookshelf spines are cropped out of 09.

00_LOOK-WORDS.txtOne line: daylit, unflattering. Under it the ten words that were killed, so nobody proposes them again.
01_COLOURS.mdFour hex values with their jobs and placements, the two forbidden pairs with their measured ratios (green on ink 3.12:1, overcast on ink 3.07:1), and the four passing pairs. The second figure read 3.09 until 13 September, which is the ratio the overcast grey had before the ramp moved. The colour changed by four digits, the arithmetic did not follow, and the number outlived the value it was measured from. The hex is not repeated here because the gate on this file refuses a colour this direction no longer runs, which is the rule working rather than getting in the way. One page.
02_TYPE.mdWork Sans 700 and 800 for every headline, Archivo 400 and 500 for everything else, and the two floors the token file actually sets: nothing below 30px on a 1080 tile, nothing below 16px on the page. This line used to name the two faces the wrong way round, and it called four numbers the three floors. One page.
03_THE-STEP.mdThe one page on the repeating device: a margin of daylight on all four sides, one step of 4 percent of the board width, four steps and then back to flush, the last block of a surface never stepped, nothing bleeding to an edge, nothing boxed, no rule drawn anywhere and no word on a photograph ever. This page used to be 03_THE-BAR.md and described a strip across the bottom of every frame, which nothing has drawn since 13 September.
04_PICTURE-KIT/The shot list above plus the delivered files, named by use: headshot-square, expression-01 to 04, wide-garden, wide-gym, cutout. One folder, one stated licence to use them.
05_TEMPLATES/Two Canva templates: cover at 1080 by 1350 and 1080 by 1920, carousel at 1080 by 1350. Both with the margin and the step locked in position and the two fonts already loaded.
06_EXPORTS/Profile photo at 320 by 320 cut from the square headshot, the five highlight covers at 1080 by 1920, and the landing page share image at 1200 by 630.
07_WHAT-STOPS.mdThe four things that stop on the next post and the three hashtags that go with them, with the note that nothing is deleted from the archive. Half a page.
6.10 The line-up test
pass1
  • competitors: adam.powe_; andy_onlinecoach; intellectual.muscle; munzfitness; christian.hardgainer
  • client tiles: Nine of the twelve mock tiles, and which nine has not been picked again since the grid was rebuilt. The old list named positions on the previous grid, 00 to 11, and left out two alcove frames and the dandelion on the reasoning that three near identical alcove frames would tell a tester about your room rather than about the look. That grid is gone. The built one runs eight tiles with a photograph and four of words on daylight, and only one alcove frame is left on it, tile 09. The reasoning still holds and the nine have to be chosen again before the pass is run.
  • rule: 3 of 5 testers pick right first try
pass2
  • cover: The pinned relaunch cover, tile 01, reduced to its outline: the photograph becomes a flat silhouette and what survives is the shape of the sheet, a visible margin of daylight on all four sides, the inset window standing inside it, and the ragged left edge of the stepped type. This used to say what survived was the bar's proportion and its 6px rule, and neither of those is drawn any more.
  • rule: 2 of 3 followers name you
when
Runs on real people after you pick, before the first post. The three accents in play across the three directions are tested in the same sitting, one per direction, and this direction's is the green #00732F. This line used to say five. What the five counted cannot be reconstructed: the phrase sits in the file's first commit, where each of the three directions already ran exactly one accent, so it has never matched the number of accents on the table. It is replaced with the count that is true now rather than explained away, and the other two hexes are left unprinted here on purpose, because a direction file quoting a colour it does not run is what the colour gate exists to catch. This used to say the sitting was needed because two of the three were green. That died when B moved to violet and C to amber: the three now run a green, a violet and an amber, so the pass is no longer about telling ours apart from each other. What it tests is whether each one is distinguishable from the accents already live in the category.
why these five
adam.powe_ because he is the only account you have named as an opponent yourself, and twelve of twelve bare tanned torsos makes him the maximum distance control that stops the board being picked to flatter. munzfitness because at 118.6 mean sRGB value it is one of the two brightest grids in the thirteen and the largest in category account in the set, so it is the one board that tests whether a deliberately pale grid is distinguishable from an accidentally light one. intellectual.muscle because its green is the nearest live hue to this accent, 2.38:1 on #39BB23, and because it runs that green as type on black, which is the exact inversion of this direction's rule that the accent is one word on a pale ground. andy_onlinecoach because it is the tightest designed card system among the small accounts and its thin orange rule is the closest live thing to a single drawn signal carrying a tile. christian.hardgainer because a photograph above a darkened band is the most common cover architecture in your category and he is where it lives; no claim is made about cover design beyond those thirteen. He was picked as the account pass 2 was most likely to fail against, back when this direction also put a band under a photograph. It no longer does, so that particular collision has gone and he is now a control rather than the hard case. Which account is the hard case for an inset picture on a visible margin has not been worked out.
6.11 Where the effort goes first
first
  • The picture kit morning. Nothing else in the kit works without it, and every stand in listed above fails for a reason that one session fixes.
  • The two Canva templates, cover and carousel, with the margin and the step locked in position so they cannot drift.
  • The four hex values and the two fonts installed on your phone once, so CapCut stops being where type decisions get made.
  • The profile photo and the five highlight covers, because they are the first thing a man who was sent a link actually sees.
  • Audio before anything visual. You film everything yourself on a phone, and the craft priority in this framework puts clean speech ahead of controlled light.
not in year one
  • No brand book. No style guide beyond the eight files above.
  • No logo system, no wordmark artwork, no monogram. Your name is set in the headline face and the step is the signature.
  • No motion graphics package, no animated intro, no lower third.
  • No studio lighting, no ring light, no gels, no hired photographer on retainer.
  • No third typeface, no icon set, no illustration style.
  • No website beyond the single challenge landing page.
spend cap
One morning of your own time, plus Canva Pro if you do not already have it. The gear stays the phone you already film on. Anything beyond the eight files in the day one kit is out of budget by definition.

The fifteen layers

The layers of the system contract, in its own order and under its own names. Seven of the fifteen are built artefacts somewhere else, so they carry a pointer to the artefact rather than a second written copy of it: a ramp written twice is two ramps that will disagree. The other eight are written here and nowhere else.

1 Idea and one sentence
sentence
Daylight is the page, the picture is an object placed on it and never a background, and every stack of content steps to the right as it goes down.
forbids
  • Nothing bleeds. No photograph, no filled field and no letter may touch an edge of an artboard, so there is always daylight around the work. Thirteen of thirteen category grids bleed, which is what makes this the one departure a stranger can name.
  • Nothing is printed on a dark ground and nothing is printed on a photograph. The dark is only ever a picture held on the page, never a page to print on. This kills the category default, which is words laid on a washed down body.
  • No box, no drawn rule and no border as a separator. Separation is daylight. The only border in the system is the two unit edge that makes a form field look like a field, and it appears nowhere else.
purpose
Let a man who is embarrassed read what is being asked of him without being shouted at, and let one coach produce three or four covers a week from a template without opening a design tool.
audience
Skinny men, twenties to thirties, arriving on a phone from a story or a direct message, reading a grid tile at about 300 pixels before they ever read anything at full size.
tone
Ordinary daylight. Plain, unhurried, said out loud rather than announced. Editorial rather than promotional, and never loud.
memorable
The stepped stack: every group of lines starts one step further right than the line above it, so the left edge of the type is a staircase. It is the only thing in the set that is visible as a silhouette at 300 pixels with the colour stripped out.
constraints
Astro with scoped CSS and no framework. Twenty four banked frames of which sixteen are natively 640 wide. No generated likeness. One accent. Sizes in cqw on an artboard and in rem on the page.
2 Colour
artefact
tokens.ramps, tokens.roles, tokens.pairs and tokens.separation. The neutral ramp and the accent ramp with every step's hex and L*, every role naming a step rather than a colour, every legal text pair with its measured contrast ratio, every illegal pair named with the reason, and the CIE76 distance from the nearest accent in the category. Recomputed by scripts/tokens.mjs on every run and printed on side 1 of the handover sheet.
3 Type
artefact
tokens.type: two families with their licences and sources, the scale with its ratio, and every named style carrying size at 1080 and on a page, weight, leading, tracking, case, ink and what it is for, plus the two floors. Rendered as a specimen at src/components/dirs/a/surfaces/specimen.astro and printed on side 1 of the handover sheet.
4 Spacing and grid
artefact
tokens.space, tokens.radius and tokens.border, emitted as custom properties by src/lib/tokens.mjs so one number holds on a board in cqw and on a page in rem. The grid itself is below, because it is A's own and lives nowhere else.
grid
  • margin: 7cqw on all four sides of every artboard, so the same absolute daylight margin appears on 1080x1350, 1080x1920, 1080x1080, 1240x1754 and 390x844 alike.
  • step: 4cqw. One step of the stepped stack. At 1080 that is 43.2px, at the 300px a grid tile is served it is 12px, which is still a visible staircase and not a wobble.
  • max steps: Four. A stack of five or more lines drops to a flush left block, because past four steps the indent eats more width than the staircase earns.
  • columns: Six columns inside the margin on an artboard, twelve on the landing page at 1280, one at 390. The gutter is space s3.
  • measure: 66 characters. A line of running copy never runs wider.
5 The repeating device
name
The step
what
The device is an offset rather than a drawn object: every block of type starts one step further right than the block above it, so the left edge of a surface is a staircase cut into daylight. Nothing is added to the board to make it, which is why it survives a system whose first rules are that nothing bleeds and nothing is boxed.
geometry
  • step: 4 percent of the board width, which is 4cqw and 43.2px on a 1080 board and 12px at the 300px a grid tile is served. On a page it is 0.75rem. Both bases are carried by --a-step in src/components/dirs/a/system.css, so one name holds on a board and on a page.
  • half step: 2 percent of the board width, and it exists for one object. The quest ladder has six bands and six full steps would spend 20 percent of the board on indent alone.
  • count: Four steps, then a reset to flush left. Past four the indent eats more width than the staircase earns.
  • origin: Steps are counted from the sheet margin, 7 percent of the board width, never from the board edge. The staircase stands inside the daylight and never enters it.
  • the foot: The last block of a surface is never stepped. The staircase always ends on a flush line, which is what stops it reading as a slide into nowhere.
clear space
The margin itself, 7 percent of the board width on all four sides, and nothing enters it. A step is only ever visible as an offset from something, and the something is the margin.
greyscale proof
One step is 12px at the 300px a grid tile is served and four of them are a 48px staircase. It is a silhouette rather than a colour, which is why it is the one thing in this direction that survives the desaturation test.
collision
The step never carries type onto a photograph, because no type sits on a photograph in this direction at all. The window is not stepped: measured on 13 September, no .a-window in any component under src/components/dirs/a/ carries a step class, so a picture sits flush inside the margin and the staircase runs beside it rather than across it.
one word
the staircase
6 Composition
the sheet
Ground, then a margin on all four sides, then everything else inside it. The edge of the sheet is always visible, which is the departure.
the stack
Content is a vertical stack of blocks. Each block starts one step right of the block above it, to a maximum of four steps, then resets.
the window
Where a surface carries a photograph it is one inset rectangle sitting inside the margin, aligned to the columns, with daylight on all four sides and no type over it.
the foot
The last block of a surface sits on the bottom margin and carries the thing to do: the handle, the trigger word, or the call to action. It is the only block that is not stepped, so the staircase always ends on a flush line.
nothing is centred
Nothing is centred, ever. Every line hangs off its own step.
how to tell it apart in greyscale
A visible margin on all four sides where thirteen of thirteen category grids bleed, a left edge of type that is a staircase, a photograph as an inset object with daylight around it, and no box, rule or border anywhere.
7 Photography
light
Ten o'clock daylight, outdoors or at a window. Overcast is welcome, direct sun is not.
distance
Arm's length to three metres. Head and shoulders or half body. No full body, because the inset window is not tall enough to carry one at a readable size.
temperature
Neutral to slightly warm, 5200K to 6500K. The gym he trains in is dark with green LED strips, which is outside this direction for new material. Where a surface needs that room because the story happened in it, the existing frame stands in and the record says so: the gym in daylight is the first shot on the list below, and until it exists the landing page is carrying a stand in.
background
A real place with depth: sky, a wall, a hedge, a gym floor. Never a seamless backdrop.
wardrobe
Plain, no chest print, no wordmark. This is the constraint his own bank fails most often.
never
  • No photograph is darkened, tinted, duotoned or washed down. If a frame needs to be dimmed to carry type, the type is in the wrong place.
  • No photograph bleeds to an edge.
  • No photograph sits behind a word.
  • No base, no aircraft, no uniform as a set.
  • No other identifiable person.
why it fits his material
Sixteen of his twenty four frames are natively 640 wide. An inset window at 60 percent of a 1080 board asks 648 pixels of the source, so his own frames are shown at roughly one to one instead of being enlarged 1.7 times to fill a bleed. The visible softness in the old hero was an enlargement artefact, and this composition removes the enlargement rather than sharpening the result.
shots he owes
  • The gym he trains in, in daylight or with the house lights up. Why no banked frame stands in: every gym frame in the bank is lit by green LED strips at night, which is a second art direction rather than this one.
  • A head and shoulders portrait in plain clothes with no chest print, outdoors, overcast. Why no banked frame stands in: seven of twenty four frames are clean for a protected surface and the cleanest of those is a Christmas jumper.
  • Him holding a door, a gate or a gym door open, from outside, in daylight. Why no banked frame stands in: the one threshold frame he owns carries his own burned in caption across it.
  • A half body frame with room on one side for a stepped stack. Why no banked frame stands in: every frame in the bank is centred on him, because they were all shot as talking heads.
  • Two men walking into a gym together, from behind, no faces. Why no banked frame stands in: the bank has no second person with recorded consent, and this is the one picture the sentence is about.
8 Iconography
decision
There is no icon set and there is no graphic mark. Both would be a drawn object, and the third forbid rules out drawn objects as separators or ornaments.
what stands instead of
The five highlight covers are typographic: one name set in the display face on the daylight ground, a word or two long, each at a different step, so the row of five reads as a staircase at 60px rather than as five identical circles.
the one exception
The safe band overlay on a story board and the grid safe square on a reel cover are annotations on a mock, not part of the system, and they never ship.
9 Motion
artefact
tokens.motion: durations, easings, the named transitions with their trigger and what each one tells the viewer, and the never-moves list. Printed on side 1 of the handover sheet.
10 States
artefact
tokens.states: four parts at eight cells each, rest through hover, focus, active, done, disabled, empty and error. The call to action is printed on side 2 of the handover sheet because that is the part the contract singles out, and the other three are in the token file complete.
11 Component kit
artefact
src/components/dirs/a/: Landing, Profile, Slide and Tile, the shared parts in parts/, and one component per surface in surfaces/. Every one takes props and reads tokens, which is what the contract asks for in place of hand written HTML strings in a data file. src/lib/surfaces.mjs lists what is built and every board it renders.
12 Misuse
board
  • A photograph bled to the edge of the board.
  • A word printed over a photograph.
  • A headline printed on a dark ground.
  • A filled box drawn around a block.
  • A hairline used to separate two sections.
  • A second hue introduced for a ladder level.
  • The wash used as a button fill.
  • The display face set in capitals.
  • A stack stepped more than four times.
  • A block centred on the board.
13 Voice as it touches design
case
Sentence case everywhere, with the full stop kept, exactly as copy.json sets it. Capitals are used only for the label style, which is the eyebrow, the counter and the band name. This is the single loudest separation from the other two directions and from the category: thirteen of thirteen category accounts headline in a sans and seven of those in heavy uppercase.
numerals
Quest numbers are set in the display face at the numeral style, in the accent, on their own step, and never inside the sentence they number. Seventeen of them exist in copy.json and they are the brand's only recurring numerals.
line breaks
A headline breaks where the sentence breathes: after a full stop, after a comma, before a verb. Never between an article and its noun and never between a preposition and its object. The splitter in type.ts prefers punctuation, then the longest safe word boundary.
forbidden
No em dash, no en dash, no exclamation mark, no curly quote. Carried from the house rule and checked in the render.
caption box
Decided: no. The platform caption box is the category's own furniture at nine of thirteen and A prints on daylight, so a rounded black label would be the one borrowed object in the system.
14 Handover
artefact
src/components/dirs/a/surfaces/handover.astro, two sides of A4 at 1240 by 1754. Side 1 is everything a builder pastes, side 2 is the layers. Every figure on both is read out of this file at build time, so the sheet has no second version of the system to drift away from.
15 Governance
checks
  • The margin is intact on all four sides.
  • No photograph touches an edge or carries a word.
  • Every colour came from a token.
  • The stack steps at most four times.
  • The case is sentence case outside the label style.
  • The render was opened at 300px.
owner
Andreas decides a change to this block. A change is recorded in the direction file with its date and its reason, never in a component.

The working behind the commitments

Each thing this direction commits you to is one sentence on the direction page. The measurement or the count that decides it is here, in the same order.

A daylight quota, and this is the one that decides whether the direction is visible at all: the built grid carries eight photographs across its twelve tiles, and exactly one of the eight, the gym, is darker than the middle account in your category. Keep that at one. This used to read "at least eight of any twelve tiles are shot in daylight", which the rebuilt grid cannot meet, because four of its twelve tiles carry no photograph at all.

Measured on the 1080 working copies, as the arithmetic mean of sRGB channels: your five banked commercial gym frames run 44.6, 52.8, 55.3, 74.7 and 81.6 out of 255. One of the five is on the built grid, DYt57JzCCYw on tile 03, and the picture window of that tile measures 48.0. The two brightest windows on the same grid are 174.7 on tile 07 and 164.0 on tile 01, both of them you outdoors in daylight. That gap, about 127 points between your own daylight and your own gym, is the whole of what this commitment is about. Against the category, the gym window sits under the middle account at 82 without reaching the floor, which is 8.2, and the daylight ones sit above the brightest account at 118.8. This paragraph used to compare picture areas rather than whole tiles, because the tile then carried a 300 pixel strip of flat colour the category covers do not have. No strip is drawn now, so the whole tile is the cover and the two compare directly. Measured on the rendered tiles, the eight picture windows run 164.0, 48.0, 92.7, 89.5, 174.7, 92.7, 136.9 and 119.1 of 255, in tile order, so the gym is the only one of the eight below the category's middle account. Tile positions here are the rendered ones, 01 to 12; the old version numbered them 00 to 11 on a grid that no longer exists.

One cover template in Canva, two fonts installed once, and one rule: no word ever sits on a photograph, so you stop typing headlines fresh over your own face.

The measured defect this replaces is four separate headline treatments across twelve tiles.

Four tiles in twelve carry no photograph at all. Counted on the built grid, eight of the twelve set a picture into the ground and four are words on daylight alone, and the five highlight covers carry no picture either. This used to promise the opposite, that every piece carried a photograph and the highlight covers were the one exception. The rebuild on 13 September dropped that promise to give the grid some rest, and it costs you: four tiles in twelve show a stranger nothing but words.

Twelve tiles built on one identical arrangement gave the grid no rhythm, which is the finding the rebuild answered. What replaces it is a rhythm you now have to run yourself: every tile still carries a sentence, and four of them carry nothing else.

Five highlight covers that read as a set rather than as five signposts, and this one is a limit rather than a preference: the row still works as a row, and it does not work as five separate doors.

At the size a highlight bubble is actually drawn, about 64px, the word on a cover is unreadable in all three directions, so what has to tell them apart is shape. This system leaves almost none to use: nothing bleeds to an edge, nothing is printed on a dark ground, nothing is boxed and no rule is drawn, which are four of its own first rules. Measured on the five rendered covers, each one is about 99 percent daylight: the ink covers between 0.86 and 1.09 percent of the board, so the five differ from each other by a quarter of a point of area. The same measurement gives B a spread of one point and C a spread of twenty, so C's five are told apart at a glance and B's are only a little better off than yours. This used to say 97 percent and one point, both measured on the build before 13 September.

No headphones in any gym frame.

Your own first non negotiable is "No headphones.", and the gym frame this kit would otherwise use, DFx0YKAKp6g, has AirPods in. It is also the darkest of all 24 at 44.6, which this file says two elements away, so the grid would argue with the ladder on the same screen. The built grid prints the words NO HEADPHONES on the gym tile itself, tile 03, and the frame under them is DYt57JzCCYw, which has none in: checked at magnification on the render, 13 September 2026.
