Through The Door: the specification

The build document for this direction. Everything a builder needs and nothing needed to choose.

What is in here

The eleven elements of this direction written out in full, the fifteen layers of the system contract, the working behind each thing choosing it commits you to, and the record of where every fact came from. None of it is needed to pick a direction, which is why it is here and not on the page you choose from.

The eleven elements of this direction

The twelfth, the category field, is the same sheet for all three, so it sits on the overview page rather than in here.

6.1 The reference pile
nameoutside industrytakenot takewhere
Caravaggio, The Calling of Saint Matthew, 1600, Contarelli Chapel, RomeyesThe entire event is a shaft of light entering from an unseen door on the right and a hand summoning a man who has not moved yet. The subject is the threshold and the gesture, not the room. The chiaroscuro grade and the theatrical staging. We shoot available light on a phone and never build a light.OURS
Edward Hopper, Rooms by the Sea, 1951, Yale University Art GalleryyesAn open door with a hard edged block of daylight laid across the floor, and almost nothing else in the picture. Proof that a door and a patch of light carry a whole frame with no figure in it.The emptiness and the stillness. Ours always has a man mid-step, and the one object tile we allow is the exception that makes the rest read.OURS
The National Geographic yellow border, in continuous use since 1910yesOne flat yellow rectangle in exactly the same place on every issue, doing no job except framing, which turns a hundred unrelated photographs into one series. It is the argument for a strip that never becomes a word. That it runs all four sides, and that it houses a logo. Ours is one edge only and carries nothing but your name.OURS
London Underground platform edge markings, the painted yellow lineyesA saturated yellow line that says the edge is here, read at speed by someone not looking for it, never decorative and never a shape. The hazard meaning and the black diagonal hatching. Ours marks a way through, not a danger.OURS
Saul Leiter, New York street photographs shot through doorways, awnings and glass, 1950syesThe near edge of a doorway is allowed to block a third of the frame and stay completely dark. The obstruction is the composition rather than a mistake to crop out. What this direction takes from that is the held third itself: the left third stays empty and the rule stands at its inner edge, whether or not anything architectural is there to make it.The colour film haze and the anonymity of the subject. You are always identifiable and always in focus.OURS
Gregory Crewdson, Beneath the Roses, 2003 to 2008yesA figure stopped on a threshold with the light behind it, held long enough that the doorway becomes the subject of the picture. Taken as the pause and the backlight, not as an instruction to go and find such a door: the threshold in our own frames is drawn. The crew, the cinema lighting and the staged dread. Ours is one man, one phone and whatever light the morning gives.OURS
Your own post DKT6579KRxN, May 2025, the morning routinenoThe threshold picture you have already made once without being asked: at the glazed door, hands on the frame, holding it open, the light coming in past you. It is the one frame in the bank where the drawn line would land on a real edge, and it is in none of the twelve tiles. It carries the hero of the landing page and nothing in the grid. This line named tiles 02 and 07 until 13 September, and neither of them holds it.Everything about how it is made. It is shot from behind, dead centre, in a novelty avocado print robe, with a white script Good Morning burned across the middle. The direction keeps the idea and rejects the back view, the centring, the script and the joke.YOURS

rejected decision
The arms crossed cut-out of you on a flat colour field as the relaunch tile, which is what any designer reaches for on a rebrand. It is posed, centred, closed, evenly lit, and you are on your own. DRAGGED rejects it because nothing is moving and nothing is pulling you. AJAR rejects it because the frame is sealed: there is no edge in it at all, found or drawn, and so nothing beyond one. It is out, and with it go all centred lock-ups, so no headline on this account is ever centred.
6.3 The size of the departure
category default
The man is already inside the room. His own face into the lens at chest up distance in 7 of 13 accounts, a weights gym or its changing room standing behind the work on three or more tiles in 8 of 13, and a bare torso on four or more tiles in 8 of 13. Not one of the thirteen shoots from outside a threshold. Measured on 12 September against the composition, and the category is emptier still: not one of the thirteen draws a vertical at a repeated horizontal position on the majority of its twelve covers, and not one of the 156 covers leaves a column on either side empty of type and subject.
deviation
Every piece carries a hard amber vertical at one third of the frame with the third to the left of it left empty, drawn in editing at the same coordinates on a photograph and on a designed piece alike.
clause
Everybody in this niche shoots the man already inside the room, face to the lens with the gym behind him; we lay a hard amber threshold across every piece in the same place and leave the third to the left of it empty, so the frame has an edge in it whether the room does or not. Everything else stays conventional: a dark ground, a heavy grotesque, exactly one saturated accent, the name parked small, the before and after pair kept, the talking head with burned in captions kept. Two words came out of that list on 13 September because the build contradicts them. It said black ground, and this direction's dark field is a cold slate rather than a black, which its own colour section states as the measured departure from a category that builds on near black at eight of thirteen. And it said caps, while layer 6 on this same page sets headlines as sentences with their full stops kept. A page that argues with itself two sections apart is worse than either version alone. The one real neighbour, and it is worth knowing precisely: andy_onlinecoach does run a hard coloured rule in a fixed place on a near black card, an orange strip about 8px deep along the top edge of his designed cards, and his headline starts about 8 percent in from the left. It is the same idea turned ninety degrees, which makes it direction A's move rather than this one's, and it leaves no column empty.

count basis
Population: the thirteen in-category accounts named in the category sheet, section 2.1. Nineteen accounts have a folder in the research set, and they reconcile to thirteen by removing mistryoffitness, which is age gated and was never captured, coach.kelv, which is your own account, and the four the sheet puts out of category. Basis: twelve post covers per account, 156 covers, the avatar.jpg in each folder excluded because a profile picture is not a grid tile. Measured as captured, at widths of 540 to 1080, with every position given as a fraction of that cover's own width and never converted to what Instagram serves. Artefact: the thirteen grid montages in the research set plus roughly thirty covers opened at full size. Two gates, both empty: the largest cluster of a repeated full-height vertical at one position is 3 of 12, andy_onlinecoach at 0.488 of the width, and that is the white gutter between the two photographs of a before and after pair rather than a drawn rule. Nine of the thirteen have none at all. On the empty column, the lowest ratio of left-third detail to the rest at any account is 0.38, where an empty column would give 0.15 or less. Counted on 12 September.

6.4 The one thing that repeats

The jamb and the sillTwo bars of border rule weight meeting in an L. The vertical one stands on the seam between the dark field and the lit room and bleeds off the top and the bottom of the board, which is what makes it a near jamb rather than a frame. The horizontal one stands under the room. The far jamb and the head are out of frame because you are already in the opening.

  • When something collides with it: Nothing crosses the jamb. Type is flush to it on the room side and a photograph is cut by it on the dark side: the dark field is exactly the width of the seam and hides its overflow, and the room's own left edge is drawn on top of that cut, so a picture cannot reach into the room even when the crop is wrong.
  • With the colour taken off: A value split before it is a colour split. At the 300px a grid tile is served the dark field is 100px, the room is 200px and the jamb standing between them is 5.6px, so the split is the first thing a stranger reads and the last thing he loses.

Drawn by: tokens.geometry, stated as percentages of the board so one drawing holds at 1080x1350, 1080x1920, 1080x1080, 390x844 and 1240x1754. Drawn by src/components/dirs/c/system.css, where the jamb is the room's left edge and the sill is its bottom edge rather than two objects laid on top.

The archive half of this standard, and why it is recorded as failed

This half of the standard fails and it is scored as failed rather than talked around. The standard wants the same element in the oldest published pieces and the newest. The token is new, and the relaunch scope forbids deleting posts, so the oldest half can never pass without breaking a decision you have already taken. The one honest mitigation is thin: DKT6579KRxN, May 2025, is already a man in a doorway holding it open, so a threshold is not alien to what you have made, but the token is a rule drawn in editing and no archive piece carries one at all. It was never a decision then and it cannot be added to a post already published. The newest half can pass, and the date is calculable. The grid of twelve that element 6.4 is actually tested on turns over at three to four pieces a week, so twelve consecutive tiles carrying the token takes about three and a half weeks. If the first post lands with the relaunch in late September 2026, the twelve tile test can be run and passed from roughly the third week of October 2026, and not before. Anyone running it earlier is testing a grid that is half old work.

6.5 The colour set

8 neutrals and 4 steps of amber. Every value below is the one the boards render from, so this list cannot disagree with the pictures above it.

The neutrals

  • n0 #E2ECFE L* 93.2 the lit room. The raised ground, and the field every word sits in. A cold white, because the only warm thing anywhere in this system is the amber on the jamb
  • n1 #CFD9EB L* 86.4 a step inside the room: a quest row, a table band, the face of the sill
  • n2 #A8B1C2 L* 72 hairline and rule inside the room, and type on the dark outside where n0 would shout
  • n3 #7B8392 L* 54.6 disabled ink and disabled fill
  • n4 #515967 L* 37.6 muted ink: labels, captions, the why line under a quest
  • n5 #222936 L* 16.5 the dark outside. The page ground, and it is a cold slate rather than a black or a brown on purpose. Eight of thirteen category accounts build on near black and direction B holds the warm dark, so the only unoccupied dark in the set is a cold one
  • n6 #121A27 L* 9.1 body ink inside the room
  • n7 #02081A L* 2.4 display ink, and the only colour that may sit on the amber. A blue black rather than a neutral one, which is what keeps the bottom of this ramp away from the bottom of B

The accent, amber

  • a0 #FFD27A L* 86.4 the jamb at low emphasis, on a board where the full amber would take over
  • a1 #FFAA00 L* 76.1 the accent. The jamb and the sill, and nothing else
  • a2 #C27F00 L* 58.6 the accent pressed, and the done state
  • a3 #6B4500 L* 32.7 the amber dark enough to be ink. The quest numeral, and nothing else

What each colour is for

RoleStepValueWhat it does
ground n5 #222936 the dark outside. The page ground, and it is a cold slate rather than a black or a brown on purpose. Eight of thirteen category accounts build on near black and direction B holds the warm dark, so the only unoccupied dark in the set is a cold one
groundRaised n0 #E2ECFE the lit room. The raised ground, and the field every word sits in. A cold white, because the only warm thing anywhere in this system is the amber on the jamb

inkMuted n4 #515967 muted ink: labels, captions, the why line under a quest
hairline n2 #A8B1C2 hairline and rule inside the room, and type on the dark outside where n0 would shout
accent a1 #FFAA00 the accent. The jamb and the sill, and nothing else
accentInk n7 #02081A display ink, and the only colour that may sit on the amber. A blue black rather than a neutral one, which is what keeps the bottom of this ramp away from the bottom of B
done a2 #C27F00 the accent pressed, and the done state
focus a1 #FFAA00 the accent. The jamb and the sill, and nothing else
disabled n3 #7B8392 disabled ink and disabled fill

A role names a step, never a value, so moving the ink one step darker is one edit and every surface follows.

n7 #02081A n3 #7B8392 5.23:1 17px, weight 400 ink on the disabled fill, so a disabled row is still readable

Which pairs are forbidden, and why

TypeOnContrastWhy it is out
n0 a1 1.61:1 the room colour on the amber. It is the obvious move, it is unreadable, and it is the one this system will be broken with first. Only n7 may sit on the amber
a1 n0 1.61:1 the amber as a word inside the room
a1 n5 7.65:1 legible and still forbidden. The amber is a drawn edge and a sill, never a word, never a fill behind type. Bumble states the same rule about its own yellow, and it is what keeps the colour meaning threshold rather than meaning emphasis
a2 n0 2.79:1 the pressed amber as text
n3 n0 3.21:1 the disabled step used as text. Disabled is a state, not a grey
n2 n0 1.81:1 the hairline colour used as text
n4 n5 2.07:1 muted ink on the dark outside. The outside carries n0, n1 or n2 and nothing else
n4 a1 3.7:1 muted ink on the amber, which would pass only at 24px bold and is never set that large on a jamb 20px wide

Distance from the colours already in your category: the nearest of the ten accents sampled from thirteen competing grids is #DDCC02 (gye_fit), and this accent sits dE76 32.6 from it. The category owns yellow: the nearest ten accents include a yellow at dE 18.9 from the old value and a gold at dE 12.0, and no yellow anywhere on the hue wheel clears dE 25 from both. Amber does, at 32.6 from the nearest of the ten and 22.6 degrees of hue from the yellow it used to sit beside. It is still the drawn rule the client kept.

6.6 The two typefaces

Two families and 9 styles. Every number below is the one the boards render from, so this list cannot disagree with the pictures above it.

Archivo Variable display

Licence OFL-1.1. Fontsource, @fontsource-variable/archivo, the wdth build

Archivo's variable font carries a width axis from 62 to 125, and this system sets it to 114 percent. Nobody in the thirteen category grids runs an expanded face: seven of thirteen set heavy uppercase and five of those are condensed, so expanded is a measured departure that costs nothing and needs no new dependency. The token generator carries no width axis, so this number is applied once, in src/components/dirs/c/system.css on .c-face-display, and that is the only place it exists.

label text 32px 12px 600 1.1 0.16em upper an eyebrow, a counter, a level name, a button label. The only style set in capitals, and capitals are furniture in this system rather than voice
caption text 24px 12px 400 1.35 0.01em sentence a note under a figure and a disclosure line. Never on a 1080 tile, see the floor below

Scale ratio 1.32. Nine named styles on a 1.32 scale from 24: 24, 32, 42, 55, 72, 97, 127, 168, and 260 for the two objects that are a shape before they are a word. The direction shipped one face, one weight, one case and one tracking, which produces one headline and nothing else. Tracking varies by band because one value is wrong at 12px and at 127px at the same time. Which of the nine a given headline is set in is computed, not chosen: see `fit` above.

The floors

  • On a tile: nothing below 32px at the 1080 board.
  • On the page: nothing below 17px.
  • Measure: no line longer than 62 characters.

32px at 1080 is 8.9px when a grid tile is served at 300, which is a mark and not a message, so the label is the smallest style permitted on a 1080 board and the caption never appears on one. Everything a stranger has to read at thumbnail size is set at title or above, which is 97px at 1080 and 27px at 300. Body on a page never drops below 17px and nothing on a page is set below 12px.

Your own front door is welcome in the frame and is not the reason for coming here.your own property, no booking, dailyNo banked frame exists of your own front door. The nearest, DZAJPmyjt7z, is the country lane run and is excluded: three unconsented faces in frame and you are in sunglasses rather than your own glasses. The run group stays cut. The missing frame costs the street tile its picture and costs the token nothing, because the rule is drawn.no
6.8 The picture kit
session
One morning at your own house: the garden first while the light is good, then the street, then the plain interior wall for the cut-out. A second block of about forty minutes at the gym on a quiet hour. Nothing has to be tested first.
shots
  • use: headshot, brief: Square. Shoulders up, eye level, glasses on, beard, neutral face, no smile for the camera, a plain wall or the Cotswold stone directly behind you, nothing else in the frame. Cropped so the face fills at least half the square, because this file is served at 64px., stand in: DC4lTlrK0i6, why stand in is not enough: The stand-in is DC4lTlrK0i6, which your picture bank carries unrestricted: face close, mouth closed, straight to the lens, on a flat curtain. Its BROOKLYN NEW YORK CITY chest wordmark is a place name rather than a brand, the same reading A applies to SAN DIEGO on a hoodie, and the crop clears it entirely. The cost is the orange curtain behind you, a saturated colour that is neither direction's accent, and it is why the picture kit still asks for a shot headshot rather than treating this as solved. DEXmnZDNVNC is a better face but is shot from below at dusk against flat sky, and a low angle is forbidden in this direction.
  • use: expression, brief: The summons. Half turned back towards the lens with one hand out, the come on gesture, taken mid-step. No doorway needed behind you. This is the single most important frame in the kit because it is the sentence made into a picture., stand in: , why stand in is not enough: Nothing in the 809 banked covers shows you gesturing anyone towards you, and that is the whole reason. The missing gesture makes the shoot day non-optional rather than a nice to have. No stand-in is named here, because there is no closest frame to name.
  • use: expression, brief: Making a hard point. One hand up, mouth open mid-word, looking straight down the lens, standing rather than seated., stand in: DP4Eeq9CJgN, why stand in is not enough: Seated in the home office with a WWE belt, a graduation card and a cluttered bookshelf behind you, and the gesture is two raised index fingers, which is a lecture rather than an invitation.
  • use: expression, brief: Deadpan, funny about yourself. This is the face your comments actually respond to, and your measured comment spikes are both self deprecating posts., stand in: DSpVFHTiGyj, why stand in is not enough: A novelty Christmas jumper dates the frame to one month of the year, and the woods are not one of the three places.
  • use: expression, brief: Explaining, both hands open, calm. The talking head expression, shot standing at the gym rather than seated at home., stand in: DQUf4JUiHvT, why stand in is not enough: Seated, home office, the same bookshelf, and the hands are outside the frame edges rather than inside the composition.
  • use: wide, brief: A wide in your own garden. You mid-step and moving, clothed, glasses on, cropped at mid thigh, the paving and the stone wall behind you, and the left third of the frame kept clear so the rule has somewhere to sit. The door is welcome in the frame and is not asked for., stand in: DEcbTukNcoC, why stand in is not enough: It is the right garden and the wrong picture. There is snow on the ground and the tub, you are in a novelty avocado print robe and pale blue Crocs throwing a snowball, and the whole thing is a joke. DUx4nVEDgLO does show a white door frame at the right edge but is a night shot lit by a torch with no person in it, which rules it out on the person rather than on the door.
  • use: wide, brief: A wide at the gym. You crossing the floor rather than posed at a rack, full figure, the room legible behind you, the left third of the frame kept clear for the rule. The entrance is welcome and is not asked for., stand in: DFx0YKAKp6g, why stand in is not enough: You are wearing AirPods, which cannot appear on any piece for an account whose first non-negotiable is no headphones. And a saturated green LED strip runs along the mirrored wall directly behind you, which fights the amber strip in the same frame. You are also standing at a dumbbell rack in the middle of the room rather than crossing the floor.
  • use: cutout, brief: You mid-step with one arm extended towards the lens, shot against the plain interior wall so the silhouette separates cleanly. Used at small size on the page and never as a hero tile., stand in: DGspfjGKMhn, why stand in is not enough: The wall is right and everything else is wrong. You are in a football shirt carrying three third party marks, the pose is a static flex for a joke, you are centred, and you are standing still, which is the exact tile this direction rejects.
gaps
  • No banked frame shows you with a hand out, calling anyone in. The summons frame does not exist and cannot be faked from the archive.
  • No banked frame of your own front door exists at all. The only front door adjacent frame is the run, which is cut for consent and stays cut. The missing frame costs the token nothing and costs the street tile its picture.
  • The one threshold picture you have made, DKT6579KRxN, is shot from behind, dead centre, in a novelty robe, with a script overlay burned in, a two line script lockup across the middle third. Your picture bank records its text overlay as large, in both of the entries that carry the frame, under wide and under cutout, so the record matches the picture and there is nothing to correct.
  • No frame exists of the two doors at the same time of day, so there is no evidence of what the back door looks like with the light behind it in October rather than in May.
  • No square crop of your face exists anywhere in the 809 that holds up at 64px.

fileholds
00_look-words.mdOne line. Dragged. Ajar. Underneath, the two sentences of the rejection test so a new editor can throw something out without asking.
01_colour.mdFour hex values with their jobs, the two forbidden pairs written as forbidden, and the measured ratios: ink on the room 16.79:1, ink on the amber 10.46:1, muted ink on the room 5.94:1, the room colour on the amber 1.61:1 never set. The first and the third used to read ink on ground 17.56:1 and stone on ground 5.82:1. Both numbers were measured against ramps this direction no longer runs, and both names were wrong as well: type in this direction sits in the lit room, not on the dark ground, so the pairing a builder needs is the one against the room. Ink on the dark ground is 1.37:1 and is forbidden rather than measured. One page. The two amber figures used to read ground on yellow 12.32:1 and ink on yellow 1.42:1, both measured against the yellow this direction used to run. They are re-read here from the token file.
02_type.mdArchivo Variable and Inter Variable, both OFL, both from Fontsource rather than the Google Fonts page: the packages are @fontsource-variable/archivo, and the wdth build of it specifically, and @fontsource-variable/inter. Archivo is set to a width of 114, the expanded setting, and that setting is the point rather than a detail, because nobody in the thirteen category grids runs an expanded face. Sentence case for headlines, with the full stop kept. The floors are read out of the live token file rather than typed here, and today they stand at 32px for the smallest size allowed on a 1080 board and 17px for the smallest body on a page, with the sentence that says why, which is the 300px tile. One page.
03_the-token.mdThe drawn threshold, on one page. The two measurements that never change, the rule at one third and the sill flush to the bottom of the grid-safe square, drawn the same way on a photograph and on a text slide. The rule that the left third stays empty. The rule that the amber never touches a letterform.
04_shoot-rules.mdArm's length is fine, and it is the reason this direction is producible at all. A ledge or a cheap tripod for the two wides only, where you have to be in the frame whole. Three places and no others. No AirPods in any frame. No green LED strip behind you. You do not wear the mustard hoodie in a designed piece and the amber strip never lands beside the mustard curtains. No other face in focus, ever, because no consent is recorded for anybody. Nothing centred.
05_picture-kit/The shot list above and the files it produces: one square headshot, four expression frames, two wides, one cut-out, all in one folder with a line stating you own them.
06_templates/One Canva cover template and one Canva carousel template, with both fonts loaded once. Covers get built here and not typed free hand in CapCut. CapCut keeps the video and one fixed caption style and nothing else.
07_profile-exports/The avatar at 320px square, the five highlight covers at 1080x1920, and the landing page header at 1600x900. Instagram has no banner, so there is no banner in this kit.
6.10 The line-up test
pass1
  • competitors: gye_fit; christian.hardgainer; atlas_fittraining; andy_onlinecoach; adam.powe_
  • client tiles: Nine of the twelve from the grid, all post-relaunch: the pinned relaunch cover (01), the dragged carousel cover (02), the baseline carousel cover (05), the hide carousel cover (08), the level 1 quest tile (04), and four of the five pieces that carry no photograph, the mirror line (03), the no headphones line (06), the ladder diagram (07) and the quest rule (11). The three left out of the board are the level 5 quest tile (10), the woods frame used again (12) and the fifth piece with no photograph (09), so the board is not stacked with the direction's easiest cases. The names in this entry were rewritten on 13 September: they belonged to the build these tiles replaced and called 04 a dumbbell rack, 07 a proof tile at the patio door, 10 a talking head and 11 a night wall object. None of those pictures is in the grid.
  • rule: 3 of 5 testers pick right first try
pass2
  • cover: The pinned relaunch cover, reduced to its outline: the hue dropped, the photograph flattened to two tones, and only geometry left standing. What survives is the vertical division at one third, the band across the bottom, the empty left third and the headline column to the right of the division. Made literally on 12 September, by desaturating and posterising all three pinned covers to two tones and putting them side by side: A keeps its horizontal band and rule, B keeps the empty square at the left of its eyebrow, and C keeps the vertical division, the bottom band and the clear left third. So the arrangement does survive losing the colour, which is what this pass asks. The real limit of the pass is the same in all three directions and worth stating rather than discovering later: it tests the arrangement and says nothing about whether this amber is distinguishable from the two live yellows in the category. That is what the accent pass under "when" is for, and it has not run either.
  • rule: 2 of 3 followers name you
when
Runs on real people after you pick, before the first post.
why these five
gye_fit because its live yellow #DDCC02 is the nearest of the ten sampled category accents to ours, measured at dE 32.6, and because it is the only other account the category sheet labels yellow. Those two agree now. They did not while this direction ran its old yellow: the sheet called gye_fit the yellow one while the measurement put christian.hardgainer's gold nearer, 5.9 degrees away in hue, and this entry used to print 1.03:1 and 1.04:1 as contrast ratios to say so. The move to amber settled it. christian.hardgainer because it is the closest cover architecture in the set, a photograph with the bottom darkened under a two line headline with a small letterspaced caps eyebrow, and its gold now measures dE 53.7 from ours, which is far. atlas_fittraining because it is the tightest whole system in the thirteen, which is worth holding next to the fact that it has one follower, so nothing here says a visual habit earns anything, and the nearest neighbour to heavy white caps sitting straight on a near black photograph. andy_onlinecoach because it is the only account in the set that runs a coloured rule as a hard strip on a near black card, which is this token's device wearing a different hue, measured at dE 34.7 on the re-sampled orange #D4732F, the second nearest of the ten, and because its headline mode is the category's accusing question, which this direction drops. adam.powe_ because he is the only account you yourself named as an opponent, the sheet's single B provenance, and because twelve of twelve bare tanned torsos makes him the maximum distance control that stops the board being picked to flatter. One consequence belongs on this board rather than in a footnote: andy_onlinecoach runs our own device in a different hue, and our rule is drawn on every piece rather than only on the designed ones, so the collision it tests covers the whole grid rather than three tiles of twelve.
6.11 Where the effort goes first
first
  • The two coordinates written down and cut into the templates, before anything is shot: the rule at x=360 and the sill at y=1215. That is what makes every frame you already own usable.
  • The one shoot day at the three places, which produces the picture kit and therefore the whole year of covers. It is not what the token waits on, only what the good pictures wait on.
  • The two Canva templates with both fonts loaded, because the measured defect in your current grid is four separate headline treatments across twelve tiles and two headlines clipped by the tile edge.
  • Audio before anything visual. Speech clean and dominant, checked on headphones at normal volume, which is the one craft priority every expert in the corpus agrees on and the one your talking heads actually live or die on.
not in year one
  • No brand book. No style guide. No tone ladder, no exclusion zones, no logo lockup sheet.
  • No logo system and no logo. The name is set in the same Archivo Variable as every other word, and the repeating device is the signature. This is the same conclusion the look status already recorded.
  • No motion graphics, no animated intro, no lower third package.
  • No hired gear, no studio, no lighting kit, no second camera. A phone, a cheap tripod and a clamp.
  • No second accent colour, ever. 0 of 13 category accounts run two and you currently run three.
  • No custom typeface, no licensed display face, no third family.
spend cap
Whatever the eight items in the day-one kit cost, plus a tripod and a clamp. Nothing in this direction needs money spent on it that the day-one kit does not list, and the one thing it does need, that the same two coordinates go on every piece without exception, cannot be bought either.

The fifteen layers

The layers of the system contract, in its own order and under its own names. Seven of the fifteen are built artefacts somewhere else, so they carry a pointer to the artefact rather than a second written copy of it: a ramp written twice is two ramps that will disagree. The other eight are written here and nowhere else.

1 Idea and one sentence
sentence
He is never the man already inside the room, he is the door being held open, so every surface is a dark outside and a lit room with a hard amber jamb standing between them.
forbids
  • Nothing is ever centred, on any board, at any width.
  • The accent is never a word, never a fill behind type and never a glow. It is a drawn edge and a sill, and it may carry ink on it.
  • A photograph never crosses the jamb into the lit room, and never runs full bleed under type.
audience
A man who is embarrassed to be seen in a gym, arriving on a phone from a story or a direct message.
tone
Architectural. A room lit at night seen from the dark side, with one warm edge in it, not a laboratory and not a poster shouting at him. Everything in the system is cold except the amber on the jamb, which is the only warm thing he will find anywhere on a board.
memorable
The door opens as you scroll. The dark band narrows from 38 percent at the hero to 6 percent at the closer, so the page is physically more open by the time it asks for anything.
constraints
Astro, no framework, static render at five canvases, no generated likeness, twenty four banked frames, words locked in copy.json.
2 Colour
artefact
tokens.ramps, tokens.roles, tokens.pairs and tokens.separation. The neutral ramp and the accent ramp with every step's hex and L*, every role naming a step rather than a colour, every legal text pair with its measured contrast ratio, every illegal pair named with the reason, and the CIE76 distance from the nearest accent in the category with its justification. Recomputed by scripts/tokens.mjs on every run and printed on side 1 of the handover sheet.
3 Type
artefact
tokens.type: two families with their licences and sources, nine named styles on a stated ratio each carrying size at 1080 and on a page, weight, leading, tracking, case, ink and what it is for, plus the two floors and the measure. Rendered as a specimen at src/components/dirs/c/surfaces/specimen.astro and printed on side 1 of the handover sheet.
4 Spacing and grid
artefact
tokens.space, tokens.radius and tokens.border for the scale, and tokens.geometry for the seam, the jamb and the sill. tokens.geometry stays inside the token block because src/components/dirs/c/parts.ts resolves it there by name. Both are emitted as custom properties by src/lib/tokens.mjs.
5 The repeating device
name
The jamb and the sill
artefact
tokens.geometry, stated as percentages of the board so one drawing holds at 1080x1350, 1080x1920, 1080x1080, 390x844 and 1240x1754. Drawn by src/components/dirs/c/system.css, where the jamb is the room's left edge and the sill is its bottom edge rather than two objects laid on top.
what
Two bars of border rule weight meeting in an L. The vertical one stands on the seam between the dark field and the lit room and bleeds off the top and the bottom of the board, which is what makes it a near jamb rather than a frame. The horizontal one stands under the room. The far jamb and the head are out of frame because you are already in the opening.
position rule
The seam is not a fixed place, it is the level. It stands at one third on everything he makes himself, which is level 2 of his own ladder, and steps left by one seam step for every level above that, so the room is widest at level 5. That is what stops one repeated edge becoming wallpaper, which is what happened when the same rule closed eight consecutive sections at identical weight.
crop rule
The sill sits ten percent up from the bottom of a 4:5 board, flush to the bottom edge of the grid-safe square, so the device survives the crop Instagram applies to a portrait post. On a 1:1 and a 9:16 board it sits on the bottom edge itself.
clear space
One jamb width on either side of the jamb, and no foreign ink enters it. Stated as a multiple of the device rather than in pixels, so it holds at every canvas.
collision
Nothing crosses the jamb. Type is flush to it on the room side and a photograph is cut by it on the dark side: the dark field is exactly the width of the seam and hides its overflow, and the room's own left edge is drawn on top of that cut, so a picture cannot reach into the room even when the crop is wrong.
greyscale proof
A value split before it is a colour split. At the 300px a grid tile is served the dark field is 100px, the room is 200px and the jamb standing between them is 5.6px, so the split is the first thing a stranger reads and the last thing he loses.
6 Composition
split
Every board is two fields, not one. A dark field on the left, a light field on the right, divided by a hard vertical edge at a stated percentage of the board width. No direction that runs one flat ground can be mistaken for this, and the split survives greyscale, because it is a value split before it is a colour split.
jamb
The divide is drawn, not implied: a vertical bar of border.rule weight standing on the seam, running the full height, bleeding off the top and bottom. It is the near jamb of a doorway.
sill
The lit field stands on a horizontal bar of the same weight, flush to the bottom of the grid-safe square on a 4:5 board, so the device survives the grid crop. Jamb plus sill is an L: the two sides of a doorway you can see while walking through it. The far jamb and the head are out of frame because you are already in the opening.
position is the level
The seam sits at 33.333 percent on everything he makes himself, which is level 2 of his own ladder, and it steps left as the level rises on everything the product issues: baseline 46.666, level 1 40, level 2 33.333, level 3 26.666, level 4 20, level 5 13.333. The room grows as a man climbs. This is what stops the repeating edge becoming wallpaper, which is what happened when the same rule closed eight consecutive sections at identical weight.
type sits in the room
Type is flush to the jamb on its right, never centred, never in the dark field. The dark field carries a photograph or nothing.
photograph is outside
A photograph only ever appears in the dark field. It is never full bleed, never behind type and never carries a scrim. That is why this direction can be built from a bank where sixteen of twenty four frames are natively 640 wide: a tall crop of a portrait frame is the only shape it ever asks for.
sentence case
Headlines are set as sentences with their full stops, not in capitals. All three directions shipped uppercase, seven of thirteen category accounts set heavy uppercase, and the words in copy.json are written as speech. Capitals appear in one place only, the label style, which is furniture: an eyebrow, a counter, a level name.
7 Photography
where a photograph goes
The dark field, and nowhere else. It is never full bleed, never behind type, never carries a scrim and never crosses the jamb. That is the whole reason this direction is buildable from his bank: the only shape it ever asks for is a tall crop.
shape
A tall narrow slot, never a plane. At the published seam the dark field is a third of the board, so on a 1080 by 1350 tile the picture is about 360 wide. There are two crops and the difference is not a preference. A slot fills the band and is limited by its height, so the whole height of the frame shows and the sides are cropped, which is right for a portrait shot at arm's length with the face in the middle. A window is set wider than 9:16 and is limited by its width instead, so the whole width shows and the crop pans up and down, which is the only way to cut the bottom off a frame.
light
Whatever the place actually had, exposed for him and not graded. The picture is the outside, so it is allowed to be darker than the lit room standing beside it on the board, and a frame that is already low key fits here better than a bright one.
temperature
Cold or neutral, because the amber on the jamb is the only warm thing on any board and it has to stay the only one. Warmth inside the frame is welcome where it is a thing that is really there, the mustard curtain at the patio door and the yellow paving in the garden, both of which are where the accent came from. What is forbidden is a warm grade added afterwards, and a saturated warm area placed where it touches the jamb clear space, because two ambers meeting read as one spill rather than as an edge.
distance
Half body to full figure, standing, cropped so he fills the height of the slot. A head and shoulders crop leaves two thirds of a tall slot empty. The one exception is the avatar, which is a circle and is not in the dark field at all.
angle
Eye level. A low angle is forbidden in this direction, which is why the better face in the bank, DEXmnZDNVNC, is not the headshot: it is shot from below at dusk against flat sky.
posture
Moving. Mid step, half turned back towards the lens, a hand out. Never posed at a rack, never arms crossed, never a static flex centred in the frame, because a man standing still is the tile this direction exists to reject.
background
One of his three places, and a real one with depth behind him: his own house and garden at Bampton, whichever gym he is training in, his own street. Never a seamless backdrop.
wardrobe
Clothed, shirt on, his own glasses on, no headphones, and no chest wordmark on a protected surface. No headphones is the first non-negotiable of his own ladder, so a frame carrying them cannot appear on a piece about the ladder.
never
  • No generated likeness of Kelvin, ever, and none of a stranger either. A generated face does not solve consent, it launders it.
  • No third party mark in a pinned cover, a profile avatar or a landing hero, and never legible enough anywhere else to read as a partner.
  • No base, no aircraft and no uniform as a set. The RAF may frame and never fronts.
  • No other identifiable person, because consent is recorded for nobody.
  • No alcohol, and no shirtless or swimwear frame.
  • No photograph darkened, tinted, graded or put behind a scrim so that type can sit on it. Type never sits on it.
  • No before and after of any client, on any mock, until written consent from that man exists.
why it fits his material
Sixteen of his twenty four frames are natively 640 wide. A third of a 1080 board is 360 pixels, so a tall slot asks a little over half the width of the smallest original in the bank and nothing is enlarged. The softness in the old hero was an enlargement artefact, and this composition removes the enlargement instead of sharpening the result.
shots he owes
  • The summons. Half turned back towards the lens, one hand out, taken mid step. Why no banked frame stands in: nothing in the 809 banked covers shows him calling anyone towards him, and this is the sentence made into a picture.
  • His own front door from the street, stepping out. Why no banked frame stands in: no frame of his own front door exists at all, and the nearest is the country lane run, which is cut for consent and stays cut.
  • A square head and shoulders for the avatar, eye level, plain wall behind. Why no banked frame stands in: no square crop of his face exists anywhere in the 809 that holds up at the 64px the avatar is served.
the full kit
elements 6.8_picture_kit carries the eight briefs with their stand ins and their gaps, and elements 6.7_places carries the three places with their evidence. Neither is repeated here, because a shot list written twice is two shot lists.
8 Iconography
decision
There are no icons. The five highlight covers are typographic: the word set in the display face inside a room whose seam sits at that step of the ladder, so the five read as a sequence before they read as words. Where a mark is needed and a word will not do, it is the jamb and the sill drawn alone.
why
Nine of thirteen category accounts carry a graphic mark on two tiles or fewer, so an icon set buys nothing a stranger would notice, and a drawn set would be a second visual language competing with the one device this direction has.
9 Motion
artefact
tokens.motion: durations, easings, the named transitions with their trigger and what each one tells the viewer, and the never-moves list. The one transition that carries the idea is the door opening as the page scrolls, which layer 1 states as the memorable detail. Printed on side 1 of the handover sheet.
10 States
artefact
tokens.states: four parts at eight cells each, rest through hover, focus, active, done, disabled, empty and error. The call to action is printed on side 2 of the handover sheet because that is the part the contract singles out, and the other three are in the token file complete.
11 Component kit
artefact
src/components/dirs/c/: Landing, Profile, Slide and Tile, the shared geometry in parts.ts, and one component per surface in surfaces/. Every one takes props and reads tokens, which is what the contract asks for in place of hand written HTML strings in a data file. src/lib/surfaces.mjs lists what is built and every board it renders.
12 Misuse
board
  • A second hue, anywhere. His own account runs three today and zero of thirteen category accounts run two.
  • The amber as a word, a fill behind type, or a glow.
  • The room colour set on the amber, which measures 1.61.
  • The seam centred, or the type centred in the room.
  • A photograph crossing the jamb, or running full bleed under type.
  • A gradient of any kind, including the scrim the direction used to carry under type on a photograph.
  • A headline in capitals, which is the whole category and both of the other two directions.
  • A third party mark in a pinned cover, an avatar or a landing hero.
13 Voice as it touches design
case
Sentence case with the terminal full stop kept, exactly as copy.json sets it. Capitals appear in one style only, the label, and capitals there are furniture rather than voice: an eyebrow, a counter, a level name, a button label. Every other style in tokens.type.scale carries case none. Seven of thirteen category accounts headline in heavy uppercase and all three directions shipped uppercase before the rebuild, so sentence case is the departure and it is the loudest thing the type does.
numerals
Quest numbers are set in the numeral style, which is the display family with tabular figures so a two digit number holds the same box as a one digit one. They are set exactly as copy.json holds them, unpadded, and they stand in the room on their own line rather than inside the sentence they number. The four baseline items carry no number in copy.json and none is invented: the numeral slot stays empty, which says by itself that the baseline is not optional and not counted. The one place a leading zero appears is the carousel counter, two digits in the label style.
line breaks
Every line of a headline starts on the same left edge, flush to the jamb, so a break reads as a new line and never as an indent. A headline breaks after a full stop or between clauses. It never breaks between an article and its noun, between a preposition and its object, or so that one word is left standing alone against the jamb.
the dark field carries no words
Type is never set in the dark field. The one mark that appears there is the name, set at the label size in the display family and turned on its side against the outer edge, which is furniture in a margin rather than something to read.
forbidden
No em dash. No en dash. No curly quote. No exclamation mark. Carried from the house rule and checked by scripts/artboards.mjs on every board.
caption box
Decided: no. Nine of thirteen category accounts put the hook inside the platform's own rounded caption label and he does it on none of twelve. The one recognisable object in this direction is a hard edge, so putting it inside somebody else's soft cornered box would borrow the exact piece of furniture the system is a departure from.
14 Handover
artefact
src/components/dirs/c/surfaces/handover.astro, two sides of A4 at 1240 by 1754, where the room becomes the page and the dark field becomes the margin. Side 1 is everything a builder pastes, side 2 is the layers. Every figure on both is read out of this file at build time, so the sheet has no second version of the system to drift away from.
15 Governance
checks
  • node scripts/tokens.mjs c is clean, which recomputes every ratio, every L* and the category distance from the hexes.
  • node scripts/artboards.mjs dist 4338 c is clean, which reads the text of every board at its own canvas.
  • Every board was opened at full size and again at 300px wide.
  • No hex and no font name appears in any file under src/components/dirs/c/surfaces/.
  • Every frame used on a pinned cover, an avatar or a landing hero has an empty restricted array in photos.json.
owner
Andreas decides a change to this system. A builder may not add a hue, move the seam formula or set a headline in capitals.

The working behind the commitments

Each thing this direction commits you to is one sentence on the direction page. The measurement or the count that decides it is here, in the same order.

Three places and nothing else: your own house and garden, whichever gym you are training in, your own street. You stop filming on boats, at desks, in hotel rooms and beside Icelandic road signs.

What you do not have to do is find a threshold inside them. Your last twelve tiles span eight unrelated places and that ends.

Two measurements you never change: the drawn rule at one third from the left, and the amber sill flush to the bottom of the grid-safe square.

That is the whole template, and both are typed in rather than found in a room.

Nothing centred, ever: type is flush left in the column to the right of the rule, and the left third of a text slide stays empty.

This kills the arms-crossed rebrand tile before it is made.

Amber only as a hard edged strip. Never a coloured word, never a glow, never a circle, never behind type.

One rule, checkable from across a room.

Dropping the magenta and violet, the lilac three tile banner, the brush italic COACH KELV in the pink circle, the script and serif overlays and the AI neon peacock. There is no logo at all.

The name is set in the same Archivo Variable as every other word.

Keeping the before and after pair and the captioned talking head, and putting the same rule and sill on both so they carry the token too. Not one before and after ships until written consent exists from that man.

The category proves both formats work, and neither of them needs a doorway behind it. Because consent is recorded for nobody, none of them appears on a mock here at all.

Where it comes from

Every fact this direction is built on, its source, and whose words it is in.

You have already made one threshold picture. May 2025, at the glazed patio door behind the mustard curtains, arms out, holding it open, backlit. It is the morning routine post. It is the one frame in the bank where the drawn rule lands on a real edge, which is a bonus rather than the thing the direction rests on.banked cover DKT6579KRxN, opened 12 September 2026MEASURED
Saturated mustard already recurs in your own frames before anyone chose an accent: the yellow paving slabs of the Bampton garden, the mustard curtains at that same patio door, and a mustard hoodie you wear on camera. The accent drawn from them is an amber and not a yellow, and this entry said yellow until 13 September 2026. The category owns yellow: no yellow anywhere on the hue wheel clears dE 25 from both gye_fit's yellow and christian.hardgainer's gold, and the amber does, at dE 32.6 from the nearer of the two. Against that, 0 of 13 category accounts run violet, purple or magenta, and exactly 1 of 13 runs a yellow. Each frame against the item it carries, with the share of its pixels inside a mustard window (hue 30 to 65 degrees, saturation above 0.35, value above 0.20) measured on the 1080 working copies on 12 September. Paving: DEcbTukNcoC 14.0 percent in daylight, DUnKB73jGmY 22.6 percent, and DUx4nVEDgLO 12.1 percent, which is a night frame where a floodlight is doing the work and is the weakest of the three. Curtains: DKT6579KRxN 5.3 percent at the patio door itself, and DC4lTlrK0i6 10.4 percent, a mustard curtain filling the frame behind you indoors, which your picture bank still calls orange.
