Direction B
One Box Ticked: the specification
The build document for this direction. Everything a builder needs and nothing needed to choose.
What is in here
The eleven elements of this direction written out in full, the fifteen layers of the system contract, the working behind each thing choosing it commits you to, and the record of where every fact came from. None of it is needed to pick a direction, which is why it is here and not on the page you choose from.
The eleven elements of this direction
The twelfth, the category field, is the same sheet for all three, so it sits on the overview page rather than in here.
6.1 The reference pile
| name | outside industry | take | not take | where |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The WHO Surgical Safety Checklist, the single laminated sheet used in operating theatres | yes | The empty box is the entire design. One short line per item, no illustration, no colour except where a thing is confirmed, and the sheet is the instrument the job is done with rather than a reminder about the job. | The three-phase column layout and the clinical register. We print one item per piece, never the whole sheet at once, except on the ladder tile. | OURS |
| The Duke of Edinburgh's Award record book | yes | A printed ladder of levels a young man carries around, where the entry is only complete once somebody else signs it off. That is your coach-decides-who-moves-faster rule already in physical form. | The badge, the logo and the three named tiers. You have your own five levels and a baseline, and 6.11 rules out a logo system in year one. | OURS |
| A Panini football sticker album, the printed album rather than the stickers | yes | The empty silhouette slot. You see the whole set and exactly where you stand before you own a single piece of it, which is what the 21-row ladder tile does on the profile. | The swapping, the shiny foils and any sense of collecting for its own sake. Football is yours, so the reference is legible to you. | YOURS, football and WWE are named interests, BI 40-world turns 42 and 43 |
| An aircraft pre-departure checklist and load sheet, the working document of your day job | yes | A checklist is the instrument, not a motivational device. The tick is the only event on the page and nobody signs a line they did not do. | Every visual mark of it. No uniform, no aircraft, no base, no MOD anything. This reference informs the logic and never appears on a surface. The RAF frames and never fronts. | YOUR ACCOUNT, loading supervisor on cargo aircraft, world digest section 1 |
| Atul Gawande, The Checklist Manifesto | yes | The argument the direction rests on: writing the method down in fixed order is itself the product, and experts resist it because it looks too simple to be theirs. | The hospital and aviation case studies as content. You never argue for checklists, you just publish yours. | OURS |
| The Highway Code, the numbered rules | yes | A rule is one numbered line you can quote and check, and the number is how people refer to it. That is what makes an instruction feel issued rather than suggested. | The legalese, the must and should distinction, and the illustrations. | OURS |
| An Ordnance Survey Explorer map legend | yes | A key where every symbol has exactly one meaning and never a second one. That is the accent rule: filled box means done, and it means nothing else, ever. | The colour density and the layered key. Four colours is the ceiling here. | OURS |
| A printed training log sheet, the ruled page with blanks filled in by hand | no | The blank that sits on a true baseline and is meant to be written into. This is why the text face is a monospace and why the discomfort line carries a real blank after it rather than a drawn graphic. | The weight and rep columns. The copy lock forbids weight figures and your own before weight is unsettled at 65 kg against about 75 kg. | OURS |
| parkrun, the results page and the finish token | no | The same fixed row repeated every week, free to enter, where the number tells you where you stand and not whether you won. | The leaderboard and the timing chip. Your ladder is not a race against other men, and the rejected HUD below is the same failure. | OURS |
| @andy_onlinecoach, the two designed cards in his 11 September grid | no | The discipline of the build: one letterspaced eyebrow, one heavy caps headline, one quiet subline, in fixed positions on every card. | The question mark that ends both his headlines, the orange measured at #D4732F, and the blame-flipping subline. Those are exactly the habit this direction departs from. | MEASURED, his grid, opened 12 September |
| @skinnyguyclub, twelve flat black text tiles with no photograph anywhere | no | Proof that a grid with no face on it still holds at tile size on black, and that one accent on the subject of the sentence is enough to carry a whole account. | The borrowed tweet chrome, the fake verified tick and the avatar shield. Five of our twelve tiles carry your own face for exactly that reason. | MEASURED, that grid, opened 12 September |
6.2 The two look words
- words
-
- ISSUED
- TICKED
- killed
-
- disciplined
- structured
- consistent
- focused
- clear
- simple
- strong
- confident
- honest
- no-nonsense
- rejected decision
- The gamified HUD: an XP bar, a level badge, a points counter and a fire emoji burned into the corner of every frame. It was greenlit in principle on 24 August and it is killed here, because it serves TICKED and fails ISSUED. A game HUD is screen furniture that nobody handed anybody. It has no owner, no date, no signature and no blank to fill in, and it drags a paid confidence programme towards a language-learning app. The points stay where you already run them, in the WhatsApp group and in the weekly recognition, and they never appear in the look.
6.3 The size of the departure
- category default
- A shirtless man, most often the same body twice as a before and an after with a weight or a week count written onto it, under a white sans headline that tells the viewer what he is getting wrong, set either in the platform's own caption box or in heavy condensed capitals on a black ground, with exactly one accent colour picking out a word and never a second.
- deviation
- We never ask the reader a question and never name his mistake. We print one numbered item off the ladder as a flat instruction with an empty box beside it.
- clause
- Everybody in this niche shouts a question or an accusation at the reader, verbatim: STILL SKINNY DESPITE YEARS OF TRAINING?, Struggling to Gain Muscle?, YOU'VE READ MORE ABOUT TRAINING THAN YOU'VE ACTUALLY TRAINED. We never ask a question. We print one numbered item off your ladder as a flat instruction with an empty box beside it. Everything else stays category-conventional: black ground, white heavy grotesque, exactly one saturated accent, the name parked small in a corner, a captioned talking head shot on a phone, and the before and afters kept.
- count
- 8 of 13
6.4 The one thing that repeats
The state box
How it is drawn
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| side | 10.185 percent of the board width, on every canvas |
| frame | border frame, 10px at 1080, drawn on all four sides in role ink, and it never changes with state except on locked |
| left edge | 3.704 percent of the board width, which is space s4, so the box sits on the same left margin as everything else |
| vertical | optically centred in its row, or at the cap height of the first line where the row has more than one line |
| clear space | one half of the box side on every side, measured from the frame. No glyph, rule or photograph enters it |
Its states
| State | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| empty | bone frame, interior shows the ground through. The default, and the state every public surface shows |
| progress | bone frame, interior filled with the accent from the bottom edge to half the inner height |
| done | bone frame, interior flooded with the accent, with a tick knocked out of it in accentInk. The tick is drawn as two strokes at border frame weight, 36 and 62 percent of the inner box, rotated 45 degrees |
| locked | frame and 45 degree hatch both in role disabled at border rule weight, hatch pitch one fifth of the box side |
- When something collides with it: The box never sits on a photograph. Where a row carries a photograph the box sits in the marker column beside it, on the ground, never over the picture.
- With the colour taken off: Four silhouettes, not four colours: hollow, half filled from the bottom, filled with a notch cut out, and hatched. At the 300px a grid tile is served the box is 30.6px and all four still read.
- The logo question: There is no graphic mark, no monogram and no wordmark artwork, and that is a decision rather than an omission. The recognisable object is the state box in its column. It is drawn from a formula, so it cannot be stretched, recoloured or redrawn wrong.
The archive half of this standard, and why it is recorded as failed
This half of the standard fails by construction and should be reported as a fail rather than scored as a pass. The standard wants the same element in the oldest published pieces and the newest. The token is new, and 1,234 posts sit behind it, which is the live profile count on the 11 September capture rather than the scraped corpus of 1,194 that direction C quotes, and the relaunch scope forbids deleting any of them, so the oldest published piece can never carry it. What can pass is the half the test actually administers: a stranger shown twelve tiles points at the box in at least ten. At three to four pieces a week a fresh twelve-tile grid takes 21 to 28 days, so that test can first pass 24 days after the first post, give or take four days. Until then the grid still shows violet serif captions underneath and the test fails on your own archive, which is correct and honest rather than a defect to design around.
6.5 The colour set
8 neutrals and 4 steps of violet. Every value below is the one the boards render from, so this list cannot disagree with the pictures above it.
The neutrals
- n0 #F5F2EA L* 95.5 bone. The ink on the sheet, and the ground on anything printed
- n1 #E2DCCC L* 87.8 the tinted panel on a printed sheet
- n2 #BDB5A2 L* 73.9 muted ink: body, captions, every mono label
- n3 #8A8270 L* 54.6 the printing. Every rule, every hairline, every locked mark. It never says a word
- n4 #625B4C L* 38.9 the raised ground, one step up from the sheet, for the row in progress
- n5 #484236 L* 28.2 the sheet. The page ground
- n6 #322D25 L* 18.8 the head and foot bands, and the mat behind a photograph
- n7 #1A170F L* 7.8 the deepest: print ink, the tick inside a mark, the burned in caption plate
The accent, violet
- a0 #2A0F72 L* 15.7 the mark pressed. The active state of a control, and the bled ink of a stamp
- a1 #5426D9 L* 34.6 the mark on the bone ground. Same ink, printed paper
- a2 #8E5BFF L* 52.3 the mark on the sheet. The one saturated value in the system and the only thing that says done
- a3 #C0A5FF L* 73.1 the focus ring on the sheet ground, and nothing else
Not one of the thirteen measured competitors uses violet, purple or magenta, so it is the only unoccupied hue in the field. It is also already his: his account runs violet type today. What is broken there is not the colour, it is that he runs three of them plus a gradient. Keeping the hue he owns and taking away the other two is a change he can see in his own grid.
What each colour is for
| Role | Step | Value | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| ground | n5 | #484236 | the sheet. The page ground |
| groundRaised | n4 | #625B4C | the raised ground, one step up from the sheet, for the row in progress |
| ink | n0 | #F5F2EA | bone. The ink on the sheet, and the ground on anything printed |
| inkMuted | n2 | #BDB5A2 | muted ink: body, captions, every mono label |
| hairline | n3 | #8A8270 | the printing. Every rule, every hairline, every locked mark. It never says a word |
| accent | a2 | #8E5BFF | the mark on the sheet. The one saturated value in the system and the only thing that says done |
| accentInk | n7 | #1A170F | the deepest: print ink, the tick inside a mark, the burned in caption plate |
| done | a2 | #8E5BFF | the mark on the sheet. The one saturated value in the system and the only thing that says done |
| focus | a3 | #C0A5FF | the focus ring on the sheet ground, and nothing else |
| disabled | n3 | #8A8270 | the printing. Every rule, every hairline, every locked mark. It never says a word |
A role names a step, never a value, so moving the ink one step darker is one edit and every surface follows.
Which colour may sit on which, measured
| Type | On | Contrast | From | Used for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| n0 #F5F2EA | n5 #484236 | 8.9:1 | 17px, weight 400 | display, title, lead and every ladder line on the sheet |
| n2 #BDB5A2 | n5 #484236 | 4.88:1 | 17px, weight 400 | body, caption and every mono label on the sheet |
| n0 #F5F2EA | n6 #322D25 | 12.21:1 | 13px, weight 600 | the head and foot bands, one ground step below the sheet |
| n2 #BDB5A2 | n6 #322D25 | 6.7:1 | 13px, weight 600 | the sheet reference and the counter inside the bands |
| n0 #F5F2EA | n4 #625B4C | 6.02:1 | 17px, weight 400 | the row in progress, which is lifted one ground step |
| n2 #BDB5A2 | n4 #625B4C | 3.3:1 | 24px, weight 700 | a mono label on the lifted row, and only at 24px and above |
| n7 #1A170F | a2 #8E5BFF | 4.34:1 | 24px, weight 700 | the tick inside a marked box, and the level number set on the mark at 24px and above. Below that the mark carries no words at all |
| n7 #1A170F | a2 #8E5BFF | 4.34:1 | 21px, weight 700 | call to action label on the accent, set in the mono face at numeral size and weight 700. 4.34 is under the 4.5 a small size needs and over the 3.0 a large one needs, so the label has a floor: below 21px at 700 the control has to change its fill rather than its size |
| n0 #F5F2EA | a1 #5426D9 | 7.07:1 | 17px, weight 700 | the tick inside a marked box on the bone ground, which is how the mark prints |
| n7 #1A170F | n0 #F5F2EA | 16:1 | 17px, weight 400 | everything on a printed sheet: the A4 ladder and the lead magnet |
| n4 #625B4C | n0 #F5F2EA | 6.02:1 | 13px, weight 500 | muted ink on a printed sheet |
| n7 #1A170F | n1 #E2DCCC | 13.08:1 | 17px, weight 400 | text on the tinted panel of a printed sheet |
| n4 #625B4C | n1 #E2DCCC | 4.92:1 | 13px, weight 500 | a label on the tinted panel |
| a3 #C0A5FF | n5 #484236 | 4.78:1 | 17px, weight 600 | the focus ring on the sheet, which is the only place a3 appears |
| n0 #F5F2EA | a0 #2A0F72 | 13.32:1 | 17px, weight 600 | the label on the call to action while it is pressed |
| n0 #F5F2EA | n7 #1A170F | 16:1 | 17px, weight 600 | the burned in caption plate on a still |
Which pairs are forbidden, and why
| Type | On | Contrast | Why it is out |
|---|---|---|---|
| n0 | a2 | 3.69:1 | a bone tick inside the mark. It clears the large text floor and nothing else, and at the 300px a tile is served it closes up. The tick is accentInk |
| n2 | a2 | 2.02:1 | muted ink on the mark. Invisible, and the obvious move when a label is demoted |
| a2 | n5 | 2.41:1 | the mark drawn on the sheet with no frame around it. Under the 3.0 a non text mark needs, which is why every box carries a bone frame in every state and the accent only ever fills the inside of one |
| a2 | n0 | 3.69:1 | the accent as type on paper. The accent is never type in this system, on either ground. It is a fill and nothing else |
| n3 | n5 | 2.61:1 | the printing used as a word. n3 draws rules and locked marks and never says anything |
| n3 | n0 | 3.41:1 | the same on a printed sheet |
| n4 | n5 | 1.48:1 | the raised ground used as ink |
| n1 | n0 | 1.22:1 | the tinted panel used as ink on paper |
| a3 | n0 | 1.86:1 | the focus ring colour on the bone ground. On paper the ring is a1 |
Distance from the colours already in your category: the nearest of the ten accents sampled from thirteen competing grids is #2B8FAD (teal, unattributed in the sample), and this accent sits dE76 90.3 from it. The shipped green measured dE 18.5 from a green already in the field, so it moved rather than argued. Violet is the one hue none of the thirteen uses, and it is the hue his own account already runs, so the change a viewer sees is not a new colour but the end of the other two and the gradient.
6.6 The two typefaces
Two families and 8 styles. Every number below is the one the boards render from, so this list cannot disagree with the pictures above it.
Space Grotesk display
weights 400, 500, 700. Licence OFL-1.1. Fontsource, @fontsource/space-grotesk, installed 13 September 2026
Replaced Work Sans on 13 September 2026 because direction A headlines in Work Sans too, and the proof run cropped the word dragged from both and found one set of letterforms. Space Grotesk is drawn out of a monospace, Space Mono, which is the right lineage for the one direction whose second voice is an actual mono. The separation from A is mechanical rather than a matter of taste: this is the only face in the six family slots across the three directions with a single storey g, so the very word the proof cropped is now the word that cannot be mistaken. Two measured consequences. Its capitals are 0.700 of the em against Work Sans at 0.660 and IBM Plex Mono at 0.698, so the sheet's two voices finally share a cap height. And on the 226 strings copy.json actually renders it sets 1.5 to 2.5 percent narrower per band, and the widest unbreakable word in the corpus, Question-in-a-Group, loses 59px at display, so no room it inherits can overflow.
IBM Plex Mono data
Licence OFL. Fontsource, already installed
Almost nobody in the category uses a mono, and his method is built from numbers: discomfort out of ten, seven days, level one to five, quest 01 to 17
The scale
| Style | Family | On a 1080 board | On the page | Weight | Leading | Tracking | Case | What it is for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| display | display | 137px | 54px | 700 | 0.94 | -0.018em | sentence | the one big line on a cover, a pinned tile or the landing hero |
| metric | data | 176px | 64px | 700 | 0.88 | -0.03em | sentence | a single number carrying a whole board: the level on a badge, the 30 of the challenge |
| title | display | 84px | 34px | 700 | 1.02 | -0.012em | sentence | a slide opener, a section head, a band name on the ladder |
| lead | display | 51px | 21px | 500 | 1.34 | 0em | sentence | the standfirst under a title, and the quest line on a card |
| numeral | data | 51px | 21px | 700 | 1 | 0.01em | sentence | the quest number, tabular, two digits. Seventeen of them in copy.json and the only recurring numeral in the brand |
| body | display | 40px | 17px | 400 | 1.5 | 0.002em | sentence | running copy. The longest carousel body in copy.json runs past 200 characters and this style carries it |
| data | data | 31px | 13px | 600 | 1.2 | 0.16em | upper | every label, eyebrow, field name, counter, state word and band reference |
| caption | display | 24px | 13px | 400 | 1.4 | 0.012em | sentence | the why line under a quest, and a note under a figure |
Scale ratio 1.28. Eight named styles on one ratio from a base of 40 at the 1080 board. Two families and no third. The mono is the interface and the sans is the man, and since 13 September the two are cut to the same capital height, 0.700 and 0.698 of the em, so a mono label and a sans line sitting in one row of the sheet align without a correction.
The floors
- On a tile: nothing below 24px at the 1080 board.
- On the page: nothing below 17px.
- Measure: no line longer than 62 characters.
Recomputed on 13 September for Space Grotesk, whose capitals are 0.700 of the em where Work Sans drew 0.660, so every number below went up without a size changing. The smallest style is caption at 24px at 1080, which is 6.7px when a grid tile is served at 300. Nothing at caption or data size is ever the message on a tile: it is band furniture a reader recognises rather than reads. Everything that has to be read at 300 is flagged onTile, and the smallest of those is 51px, which is 14.2px at 300 and 9.9px of cap height, against 9.3px under the old face. Title carries 16.3px of cap and display 26.7px. The gate derives its 41px floor from an assumed cap height of 0.72 of the em, so this face sits closer to the assumption the floor was built on than the one it replaced. Body at 40px is 11.1px at 300 and is deliberately not flagged: on a tile it is the second read at full size.
6.7 The place you film
| name | what is in frame | reach | evidence | restricted |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Bampton garden | Cotswold stone wall, timber fence, yellow paving, the black inflatable ice tub, and the white back door frame at the right edge. The pergola carries a string of bulb lights. The frame this comes from was opened: it carries the pergola with its string of bulb lights, the stone wall, the timber fence, the yellow paving, the tub and the white frame at the right edge, all at once. It can never sit on a mock, for two reasons and not one: you are in an open towel and swim shorts, and the frame also carries three lines of burned-in purple caption text. Whether the white frame at the right is a door or a window is not settled by this crop, and this page calls it a door. | your own property, weekly, no booking, thirty seconds from your kitchen | DUnKB73jGmY, the 312,186 play frame, opened 12 September and it carries every object listed. Note that this exact frame cannot be used: you are in an open towel and swim shorts and the shirtless rule excludes it. The usable garden frame in the picked bank is DEcbTukNcoC. | no |
| Your gym floor, at the free-weights end | Blue rubber floor, red and black machines, grey ceiling tiles with spotlights, mirrored walls, a green LED strip along one wall. | you are there several times a week anyway, no booking | DBofsJNq2FO, DYt57JzCCYw, DEpyIQoKsye and DFx0YKAKp6g, all four opened 12 September. One other gym frame, C--tUA8Nq4u, is bright fluorescent with a blue floor and white machines, but its burned-in caption is the 25kg curl joke. It is a gym abroad tied to RAF movement, not the Oxfordshire room you train in weekly, and it is not in the picked bank for that reason. | no |
| The kitchen table at home, early morning, curtains open | The table, daylight through the curtains, coffee after hydration, and the printed ladder as a real object in your hand. | your own kitchen, daily, free | The routine is documented in your own May 2025 post and your own written list. The frame is not. No kitchen table frame exists in the picked bank: DIYmC3jq13y is a Caffe Nero tray on a city street with two third-party wordmarks in it, and DKT6579KRxN is the patio door of that room shot from behind with a burned-in script Good Morning overlay. This is the direction's home set and it is the one place it cannot show. It is the first thing the picture-kit morning shoots. | no |
6.8 The picture kit
- session
- One weekday morning at your own house, starting at the kitchen table with the curtains open and moving into the garden. Two hours, your own phone on a cheap tripod at chest height, available light only, no ring light and no gel. A second short session on your gym floor at a quiet hour, framed tight enough that no other member is identifiable.
- shots
-
- use: headshot, brief: Square, chest up, at the kitchen table, plain black or grey tee, your own glasses, looking straight down the lens, not smiling for the camera. Face fills at least a third of the square so it still reads at 64px., stand in: DC4lTlrK0i6, why stand in is not enough: It is a 640x1136 video still, so any square crop throws away most of the frame and the face lands about 19px across at a 64px avatar, measured across the head rather than down it, on the square crop a 640 wide frame gives at a scale of 64/640. The mock runs it as the avatar and the picture bank carries it unrestricted: face close, mouth closed, straight to the lens, on a flat curtain. Its BROOKLYN NEW YORK CITY chest wordmark is a place name rather than a brand, the same reading A applies to SAN DIEGO on a hoodie, and the crop clears it entirely. The cost is the orange curtain behind you, a saturated colour that is neither direction's accent, and it is why the picture kit still asks for a shot headshot rather than treating this as solved.
- use: expression, brief: Issuing it. Level look, one hand flat on the table beside the printed ladder, mouth closed. This is the face that goes with a flat instruction., stand in: DP4Eeq9CJgN, why stand in is not enough: Both index fingers are raised, which is a lecture gesture and reads as telling off, the exact register the departure avoids. A WWE title belt and third-party book spines are in frame.
- use: expression, brief: Explaining the rule. Both hands open, mid sentence, talking across the table rather than at the lens., stand in: DQUf4JUiHvT, why stand in is not enough: Closest usable match in the bank, and it is still a reel still: the bookshelf is behind you again, and your own hands fill the lower third, which the letterbox crop cuts away along with your face. This note used to say the lower third is where the black bar has to land. There is no bar in this direction. A photograph here is cropped to a letterbox band and sits in its own row of the sheet, with nothing over it, so what a frame has to survive is the crop rather than an object landing on it.
- use: expression, brief: Laughing at yourself. The audit says your comments come when you do this, 35 and 41 comments against 44 percent of posts getting none., stand in: DGspfjGKMhn, why stand in is not enough: It is the right face and the wrong frame: a football shirt carrying an ESSAR sponsor block, a club crest and a MILLS mark, which is three third-party logos on one tile.
- use: expression, brief: Deadpan, unimpressed, for the pushback pieces such as the headphones objection., stand in: DSpVFHTiGyj, why stand in is not enough: The expression works. The novelty Santa jumper dates the frame to one December and cannot run in March.
- use: wide, brief: The kitchen table from across the room, curtains open, the printed ladder and a coffee on it, you seated left of centre, and everything that matters held inside the middle band of the frame, because the crop is a letterbox and takes the top and the bottom off. This brief used to ask for the bottom third clear so the bar lands on nothing, which would have had you composing around an object this direction does not draw., stand in: DIYmC3jq13y, why stand in is not enough: It is not your kitchen. It is a Caffe Nero tray on a city street with two cup wordmarks, blurred strangers behind it, and no person and no ladder in the frame. Nothing in the bank shows this place at all.
- use: wide, brief: The gym floor at the free-weights end, you standing at the rack, mid shot from the waist up, clothed, no headphones, and you held in the middle band of the frame so the letterbox crop keeps you rather than the ceiling and the floor., stand in: DBofsJNq2FO, why stand in is not enough: It is the best gym frame in the bank and it is still shot at arm's length mid-movement, with dumbbells filling the lower third. That was written as the place where the bar goes and there is no bar: the problem with the frame is the letterbox, which keeps the middle band and throws the rest away, so an arm's length frame loses you rather than the dumbbells. The other gym option, DFx0YKAKp6g, is barred outright from any baseline piece: an AirPod is visible in your right ear, and the frame shows that side because you are turned to the viewer's right. The first quest on the ladder is to complete a session without headphones.
- use: cutout, brief: Full silhouette against a plain, evenly lit wall, arms down, clothed, so it can be cut out and placed on the carbon ground., stand in: DFazV-AKfZb, why stand in is not enough: Separable to the shoulders only, and it is seated with hands clasped so there is no clean edge below the chest. The bank's only true full-body threshold frame, DKT6579KRxN, is backlit from behind with a burned-in script Good Morning overlay across the middle of it, bare legs, and your back to the camera.
- gaps
-
- No square frame anywhere in the 809 covers holds a face that reads at 64px. All 24 picked frames are 9:16 or 4:5 video stills.
- No frame of the kitchen table exists, and that is this direction's home set, the only place the checklist is a real object in your hand rather than a graphic.
- No clean cut-out exists. Every candidate is either seated, backlit, or carrying a third-party logo.
- No frame shows the printed ladder as an object. The direction's central prop has never been photographed because it has never been finished.
- Fifteen of the 24 picked frames carry a third party mark: the nine the picture bank tags as a third-party logo, plus six more that carry a written note of one. Two of the four gym frames carry something that contradicts the copy on them.
- Written consent exists for nobody, so no client card and no second face can be shot on this day.
6.9 The day-one kit
| file | holds |
|---|---|
| look-words.txt | One line. ISSUED, TICKED. Nothing else in the file. |
| colour.md | Half a page. Four hexes with their jobs, the measured pairs, and the two forbidden pairs written out: a bone tick inside the mark at 3.69:1 and muted ink on the mark at 2.02:1. The accent rule in one sentence at the top. Those two used to be printed here as chalk on green at 1.72:1 and small print on green at 1.75:1, measured when the accent was a green. They are the same two pairs, re-read from the token file against the violet. |
| type.md | Half a page. Two families with weights, the three size floors, the arithmetic that set them, and the line that says install both on the phone once and never add a third. |
| where-the-box-goes.md | One page. The box is always left of the line and sized to the surface, not to the type beside it: 88px with an 8px stroke on a 1080 artboard, 20px with a 2px stroke in a landing ladder row. Empty by default. Filled with the accent and a knocked-out tick only when the thing beside it is done. One worked example of each. |
| cover.canva | The cover template: the ground, the head band with your handle and the sheet number, the box at the left of the headline, the headline itself over two or three lines in sentence case, and the foot band with your name and the swipe cue. Both states, empty box and filled. This entry read photograph full bleed and a 360px carbon bar flush to the bottom of the grid-safe square until 13 September. Checked against the five rendered covers: none of them carries a photograph and none carries a bar. The direction was rebuilt around the ruled stack and this sheet was still describing the version before it. |
| carousel.canva | The slide template: ground, margins, top row with eyebrow and counter, the rule, the item block, the bottom block with the discomfort blank and the deadline. Plus the rule that the accent appears at most once per carousel. |
| ladder.md | One page. The 21 rows in final numbered order, the four baseline non-negotiables, the five level names, and the morning routine text. The rows are now locked in your own words, so this file is a transcription of those plus the one thing they do not have, which is the morning routine line. |
| picture-kit/ | The frames from the one session, named by use, with a one-line note that you own them and we may publish them. |
| profile/ | Avatar at 320px, five highlight covers at 1080x1920, and the bio block as text. Each cover carries one of five operations on the state box, not an empty box: an arrow into it, a rule under it, four of them in a grid, the box alone, and the box with a number beside it. The name is set as a caption under the circle rather than inside it, and two of the five names are two words. This entry said an empty box and one word each until 13 September, which described neither the marks nor the names. The five are one component, parts/Mark.astro, drawn at 1080 on the boards and at 60px in the circle from the same file, so the two cannot drift apart. Marked placeholder until the Layer 1 and 2 session sends approved strings. |
6.10 The line-up test
- pass1
-
- competitors: intellectual.muscle; andy_onlinecoach; skinnyguyclub; christian.hardgainer; atlas_fittraining
- client tiles: Nine of the twelve mocked tiles: 01 the pinned cover, 02 the ladder, 03 and 04 the two baseline quest cards, 06 the garden photograph with no words on it, 07 the one green tile, 09 the enemy carousel cover, 10 the talking head, and 12 the ice tub object tile. The three left out are 05, 08 and 11, and they are left out because they duplicate a build already in the nine, not because they are weak. Two of the nine carry no box at all, 06 and 12, which is a higher share of token-free tiles than the twelve actually runs, so the board is slightly harder than the real grid rather than flattering it.
- rule: 3 of 5 testers pick correctly on the first try, names and handles removed, one client tile shown first as the reference.
- pass2
-
- cover: Tile 03, the NO HEADPHONES quest card. Reduced to its outline what survives is the empty square at the left of the headline, the two bands closing the sheet top and bottom, and the ruled rows between them. No bar and no caps: this entry described both until 13 September and the built board has neither. There is no photograph to lose either, because this direction's covers carry none, which sharpens the test rather than softening it. If your followers recognise you by your face, this outline gives them nothing at all, and the box has to carry the recognition on its own. A second honest reading of the same outline is that it also describes andy_onlinecoach's card with the box removed, so if testers name the category rather than the man, the token is not yet doing its job.
- rule: 2 of 3 people who follow the account name you.
- when
- Runs on real people after you pick and before the first post. The accent pass runs once across all three directions together, and it has to include gye_fit and christian.hardgainer alongside the five above. The reason written here used to be that the trio carried two greens and a yellow that was the same value as a live competitor's. Neither half survived the separation work: the three now run a green, a violet and an amber, and the yellow that sat on top of gye_fit moved to an amber measuring dE 32.6 from it. Those two accounts stay on the board because direction C's amber is still the nearest of the three to their yellow and their gold.
- why these five
- intellectual.muscle because it runs its accent as type where we never let ours touch a letter, so it is the one check a tester can make in a glance. Its place on this board is inherited rather than measured: it was picked while this direction ran a green, and that green sat dE 18.5 from this account's own green, sampled at #39BB23. The accent is a violet now and no measurement of the violet against that green has been taken. What the token file does carry is that the nearest of the ten sampled category accents to this violet is a teal at dE 90.3, and that green is one of the ten, so it cannot be nearer than that. The figures this entry used to print, 1.31:1 and 35.2 degrees of hue, were both measured against the retired green. andy_onlinecoach because it is the tightest designed card system among the small accounts and its headline mode is the category's accusing question, which is exactly what this departure drops. skinnyguyclub because it is the only account in the thirteen running twelve flat text tiles with no photograph, which makes it the nearest neighbour to our five type tiles and the sharpest test of whether the box is doing any work at all. christian.hardgainer because a photograph under a darkened band with a small letterspaced caps eyebrow is the closest live architecture to a photograph with a heading under it, which is what this direction's exhibit row is once the bar it used to be described with is taken out of the sentence. atlas_fittraining because it is the tightest whole system in the thirteen, and a board picked only from weak accounts would flatter us. Worth carrying alongside that: the tightest system in the set has one follower, so nothing here says a visual habit earns anything.
6.11 Where the effort goes first
- first
-
- Finishing the ladder. It is not a design task and it blocks everything else in this direction.
- The one picture-kit morning, because the home set has no frame at all.
- The two Canva templates, cover and carousel, with both fonts loaded once.
- The five highlight covers and the avatar, because the profile is the only surface a new viewer always sees.
- Clean audio on the talking heads. Speech dominant, no handling noise, checked on headphones. Seven out of ten on the picture is fine, nine out of ten on the sound is not negotiable.
- not in year one
-
- No brand book and no style guide.
- No logo system, no wordmark artwork, no monogram. The name is set in Space Grotesk like everything else and the box is the signature.
- No second accent colour and no third typeface.
- No custom motion graphics, no animated intro, no lower-third package.
- No studio, no hired lighting, no camera purchase.
- No points HUD, no XP bar, no app.
- No client cards until written consent exists.
- spend cap
- Nothing beyond what the day-one kit lists. The only cash line is the picture-kit morning; everything else runs on Canva, two free fonts and the phone you already film on. If an item is not in the kit, it waits until the account has posted twenty pieces in this look.
The fifteen layers
The layers of the system contract, in its own order and under its own names. Seven of the fifteen are built artefacts somewhere else, so they carry a pointer to the artefact rather than a second written copy of it: a ramp written twice is two ramps that will disagree. The other eight are written here and nowhere else.
1 Idea and one sentence
- sentence
- A record card: the box is preprinted and never changes, and the only colour in the system is the mark somebody made inside one.
- forbids
-
- The accent may never be type, a background, a rule or a decoration. It fills the inside of a box and nothing else, on any surface, ever.
- No box on a public surface is shown as done unless a named client actually did it. A stranger meets an empty sheet, because four ticks at the top of a page he has not started tells him the wrong thing. Three exceptions, all of them a mark that reports something rather than claiming it: the level badge and the weekly recognition card, which are the proof loop and are about a man who did the work, and the highlight pictograms, where a marked box is the drawing of what a quest is and not a report about the viewer. Everywhere else the box is empty.
- Nothing floats. No card, no shadow, no rounded corner on anything the system draws. Separation is a rule and a change of ground value, never elevation.
- purpose
- Show a man who has never finished anything that the thing being asked of him is small, numbered, and already written down.
- audience
- A skinny man who trains in one corner of the gym and leaves in thirty minutes. He scans for whether this is going to embarrass him.
- tone
- Issued. Utilitarian, quiet, exact. The bearing of a logbook rather than a poster.
- memorable detail
- The state box, preprinted in bone and filled in violet, running down a marker column that never moves on any surface at any canvas.
- constraints
- Astro, no JavaScript inside an artboard, five open licence faces already installed, twenty four banked photographs of one man, no generated likeness, no client result.
- root
- He already writes his method as a numbered list with a coloured circle beside each band, so the look is that list.
- why it moved
- The shipped version was the same composition as direction A with a square added beside the headline, on the same ground as direction C to the hex, in the same accent family as the category. What survives is the box. Everything under it is new.
2 Colour
- artefact
- tokens.ramps, tokens.roles, tokens.pairs and tokens.separation. The neutral ramp and the accent ramp with every step's hex and L*, every role naming a step rather than a colour, every legal text pair with its measured contrast ratio, every illegal pair named with the reason, and the CIE76 distance from the nearest accent in the category with its justification. Recomputed by scripts/tokens.mjs on every run and printed on side 1 of the handover sheet.
3 Type
- artefact
- tokens.type: two families with their licences and sources, the scale with its ratio, and every named style carrying size at 1080 and on a page, weight, leading, tracking, case, ink and what it is for, plus the two floors and the measure. Rendered as a specimen at src/components/dirs/b/surfaces/specimen.astro and printed on side 1 of the handover sheet.
4 Spacing and grid
- artefact
- tokens.space, tokens.radius and tokens.border, emitted as custom properties by src/lib/tokens.mjs. The grid is two columns and a row rather than a column track, and it is stated in layers 6_composition.the_grid, where a printed form states it.
5 The repeating device
- name
- The state box
- geometry
-
- side: 10.185 percent of the board width, on every canvas
- frame: border frame, 10px at 1080, drawn on all four sides in role ink, and it never changes with state except on locked
- left edge: 3.704 percent of the board width, which is space s4, so the box sits on the same left margin as everything else
- vertical: optically centred in its row, or at the cap height of the first line where the row has more than one line
- clear space: one half of the box side on every side, measured from the frame. No glyph, rule or photograph enters it
- states
-
- empty: bone frame, interior shows the ground through. The default, and the state every public surface shows
- progress: bone frame, interior filled with the accent from the bottom edge to half the inner height
- done: bone frame, interior flooded with the accent, with a tick knocked out of it in accentInk. The tick is drawn as two strokes at border frame weight, 36 and 62 percent of the inner box, rotated 45 degrees
- locked: frame and 45 degree hatch both in role disabled at border rule weight, hatch pitch one fifth of the box side
- why the frame never leaves
- Measured: the accent on the sheet ground is 2.41, under the 3.0 a non text mark needs. The bone frame carries the edge at 8.9 in every state, so the mark is always findable and the colour only ever confirms what the shape already said. Take the frame away and the system fails a contrast floor.
- greyscale proof
- Four silhouettes, not four colours: hollow, half filled from the bottom, filled with a notch cut out, and hatched. At the 300px a grid tile is served the box is 30.6px and all four still read.
- collision
- The box never sits on a photograph. Where a row carries a photograph the box sits in the marker column beside it, on the ground, never over the picture.
- logo
-
- decision: There is no graphic mark, no monogram and no wordmark artwork, and that is a decision rather than an omission. The recognisable object is the state box in its column. It is drawn from a formula, so it cannot be stretched, recoloured or redrawn wrong.
- avatar: The avatar is a photograph cropped from the top, never a mark. At 32px a state box would close up and read as a dot, which is why the mark is not the avatar.
- what stands in for a lockup: The foot band: the name on the left, the counter on the right, closed by a heavy rule. Always the same height, always the same two items.
6 Composition
- the marker column
- Every board carries a column down its left side, 16.667 percent of the board width, which holds one thing per row and never anything else: the state box, and under it the quest numeral. It is the same width on a 1080 tile, a 1080 x 1920 story, a 390 phone and a 1240 A4 sheet, because it is set as a percentage of the board. A stranger recognises the direction by that column before he reads a word.
- the grid
- Two columns and no more, on every canvas. The marker column is 16.667 percent of the board width; the content column is everything to the right of it, running to the board edge less the margin. The margin is space s4 at the 1080 board and the same step at page scale. There is no twelve column grid, no gutter and no card track, because a printed form does not have one. Vertical rhythm is the row, not a baseline grid: a row is as tall as the box it carries plus the smallest space step above and below, so twenty one rows and six band heads clear a 1920 poster, a 1350 tile and a 1754 sheet without a second layout. Running copy is capped at 62 characters, which is the only measure in the system.
- the ruled stack
- Content is a stack of full bleed rows separated by a drawn rule that runs from the left edge of the board to the right edge, through the marker column. Nothing is ever a card. Nothing has a corner. A row that matters is not boxed, it is lifted one ground step.
- the bands
- The top of every board is a head band one ground step darker than the sheet, carrying the eyebrow on the left and the sheet reference on the right. The foot band repeats it with the handle and the counter. Both are closed with a heavy rule. Every board in the set is a member of one printed form because both bands are always there and always the same height.
- type behaviour
- Narrative is set in sentence case with the full stop kept, flush left, ragged right, leading under one. Every label, number, field name and state word is mono, uppercase, tracked wide. The two voices never cross: the man speaks in sentences and the form speaks in capitals. Seven of thirteen competitors headline in heavy uppercase, so sentence case is a departure, and copy.json is already written that way.
- photographic crop
- The photograph is an exhibit pasted into the record, never a backdrop. It occupies exactly one row of the sheet, full width, cropped to a letterbox band of 5 to 2, with the marker column carrying a box beside it like any other row. It never bleeds behind type and it is never darkened to make type readable on it.
- how to tell it apart in greyscale
- A left column that never moves, rules that cross the whole board, a photograph in a band rather than a field, two dark chrome bands top and bottom, and the only sentence case in the set.
7 Photography
- light
- Whatever he had. The system does not ask for a grade, because a grade cannot be applied retrospectively to 1,198 posts and asking for one is how a direction becomes undeliverable.
- distance
- Half body and closer. A wide scene only in the letterbox band, where the crop does the work.
- crop logic
- Every photograph is cropped to a letterbox band and placed in one row. The band has two depths and the frame decides which. A room takes 5 by 2: that crop is the art direction, because it removes ceilings, floors, shelves and most of a room, which is also what removes most of the third party marks the record lists. A close portrait takes 5 by 3.4, because sixteen of the twenty four frames were shot at arm's length on a phone and a 5 by 2 band across one of those contains an eye line and no chin. Measured on the carousel and tile renders, 13 September: at 5 by 2 the story carousel showed four cropped faces in a row. The band is still a band either way, and it is still one row of the sheet, never a backdrop and never behind type.
- never shot
- No base, no aircraft, no uniform as a set. No alcohol. No other identifiable person. No shirtless frame. No client, because no consent is recorded for anybody.
- generated
- None, ever. Not of him and not of a stranger. A generated face does not solve consent, it launders it.
- protected surfaces
- The avatar, the pinned covers and the landing hero take only a frame whose restricted array is empty: DEXmnZDNVNC, DPzAJBgCCXd, DJUdlBpKFrg, DSpVFHTiGyj, DKT6579KRxN, DYt57JzCCYw, DEpyIQoKsye, plus DC4lTlrK0i6 cropped from the top. Two of those seven are not usable on a cover for reasons the restricted array does not carry, both found by opening the render on 13 September. DKT6579KRxN is him from behind in a blanket hoodie with bare legs holding a bedroom curtain open, with a burned in "Good Morning" set in a script face from a story template: no face, and somebody else's typeface on the most protected surface in the set. DEpyIQoKsye and DYt57JzCCYw are rooms with no face in them at all. That leaves four frames for a cover, which is the real number.
- shot list when the shoot happens
-
- A 5 by 2 letterbox of him walking into a gym doorway from outside, because no banked frame is a threshold except DKT6579KRxN and that one is his patio.
- A 5 by 2 of a hand and a pen on a printed sheet, because the whole system is a record and the bank has no paper in it.
- A clean head and shoulders on a plain wall for the avatar, because seven clean frames exist and none was shot for a 320px circle.
8 Iconography
- decision
- There is no icon library and no stroke grid. There are five marks and every one of them is the state box under a different operation, so the icon set and the device are the same object.
- set
-
- name: Dragged in, mark: the box with an arrow entering through its left edge
- name: Baseline, mark: the box standing on a rule at band weight
- name: Quests, mark: four boxes two by two, one of them marked
- name: Real world, mark: the box with its right side open
- name: Challenge, mark: the box marked, with the numeral 30 beside it
- test
- Rendered at 60px in the circle crop, the five silhouettes are an arrow, an underline, a grid of four, an open side and a number. That is five different shapes rather than five labels a reader cannot read at 60px.
- adding one
- You do not. A sixth highlight would need a sixth operation on the box, and if the operation is not obvious the highlight does not exist.
9 Motion
- artefact
- tokens.motion: durations, easings, the named transitions with their trigger and what each one tells the viewer, and the never-moves list. Printed on side 1 of the handover sheet.
10 States
- artefact
- tokens.states: five parts at eight cells each, rest through hover, focus, active, done, disabled, empty and error, and the box is one of them because the whole idea of this direction is a state. The call to action is printed on side 2 of the handover sheet because that is the part the contract singles out, and the other four are in the token file complete.
11 Component kit
- artefact
- src/components/dirs/b/: Landing, Profile, Slide and Tile, the shared parts in parts/ including the Sheet and the Box the whole direction is built from, and one component per surface in surfaces/. Every one takes props and reads tokens, which is what the contract asks for in place of hand written HTML strings in a data file. src/lib/surfaces.mjs lists what is built and every board it renders.
12 Misuse
- board
-
- A second accent, for a level, a category or a state. The category rule holds at thirteen of thirteen and his own account is the only one breaking it, with three.
- A gradient anywhere, including on the mark. His current logo is a magenta to violet gradient ring and it is both the slop pattern and the rule breaker.
- The accent as type. Measured at 2.41 on the sheet and 3.69 on paper, and forbidden at both regardless.
- A bone tick inside the mark. It measures 3.69, which clears the large text floor and nothing else, and it closes up at 300px.
- A box shown as done on a public surface. It tells a stranger who has done nothing that four things are already behind him.
- A rounded corner or a shadow on anything the system draws. The only radius in the kit is the chat bubble, which belongs to the platform.
- A photograph behind type, or darkened so that type can sit on it. The photograph goes in its band.
- A third party mark on a pinned cover, the avatar or the landing hero. Eight of his twenty four frames carry one.
- structurally impossible
- Two of the eight cannot be rendered from this kit at all: there is no second ramp to reach for and no radius token above zero except the bubble. That is stronger than a rule.
13 Voice as it touches design
- case
- Narrative in sentence case with the terminal full stop kept, because copy.json is written that way and because seven of thirteen competitors shout in capitals. Every mono label in capitals, tracked 0.16em. No other case rule exists.
- numerals
- Quest numbers are set in the mono face, tabular, always two digits with a leading zero, from 01 to 17, so the column aligns from one row to the next. The four baseline items have no number in copy.json and none is invented: the numeral slot stays empty, which says by itself that the baseline is not optional and not counted.
- counters
- One spelling everywhere: 03 / 07, mono, tracked, in the foot band on the right. The shipped work had three spellings of the same element across three directions.
- line breaks
- A headline may break after a full stop or between clauses. It may never break between an article and its noun, or between a number and its unit.
- forbidden
- No em dash. No en dash. No curly quote. No exclamation mark. No ampersand in running copy.
- caption box
- Decided: no platform caption furniture. Nine of thirteen competitors put the hook inside the platform's own rounded label and he does it on none of twelve. Borrowing that box would put his one recognisable object, a drawn box, inside somebody else's drawn box.
14 Handover
- artefact
- src/components/dirs/b/surfaces/handover.astro, two sides of A4 at 1240 by 1754, printed: the sheet is bone, the ink is dark and the mark steps so it survives on white. Side 1 is everything a builder pastes, side 2 is the layers. Every figure on both is read out of this file at build time, so the sheet has no second version of the system to drift away from.
15 Governance
- checks
-
- node scripts/tokens.mjs b is clean. It recomputes every ratio, every L*, the CIE76 distance and the hue count, and it reads every surface component for a typed hex or font name.
- node scripts/render-surfaces.mjs b exits 0 with no placeholders named.
- node scripts/artboards.mjs dist 4338 b is clean. It reads the text of the artboards, which the page gate never sees.
- Every board opened at full size and again at 300px wide.
- Every frame used on the avatar, a pinned cover or the landing hero has an empty restricted array in photos.json.
- owner
- The token file is the system. A change is an edit to src/data/directions/b.json and nothing else, and it is Andreas's call. A value typed into a component is a defect and the gate says so by name.
- what is generated and never hand edited
- Every custom property under [data-dir=b] comes from src/lib/tokens.mjs. No component knows a colour, a size, a duration or a font.
- naming
-
- matrix: string: Coach Kelv, source: nameMark, set as: data style, uppercase, tracked 0.16em, ink inkMuted, appears on: the foot band of every artboard, left side. Nowhere else; string: coach.kelv, source: handle, set as: data style, lowercase exception, tracked 0.16em, ink inkMuted, appears on: the profile block and the story call to action frame only; string: Kelvin Arnott, Confidence Coach, source: profile.displayName, set as: lead style, sentence case, appears on: the profile block only; string: Coach Kelv Confidence Quest Ladder, source: ladderTitle, set as: data style on an artboard head band, title style on the A4 sheet and the lead magnet cover, appears on: every ladder rendition, the quest card, the lead magnet, the landing page eyebrow
- rule: A surface carries at most two of the four. The foot band name and one other. Never three.
The working behind the commitments
Each thing this direction commits you to is one sentence on the direction page. The measurement or the count that decides it is here, in the same order.
You write the morning routine text you still owe.
The 21 rows are locked in your own words, so this direction can print its central object today, but the morning routine row carries a name and no line, and three versions of it on record is three versions too many for a look whose whole job is to print one.
Covers get built from one Canva template with the two faces loaded once, and CapCut keeps the video and one fixed caption style and nothing else. You stop typing headlines free-hand inside it.
The two faces are the display and data families this direction sets, Space Grotesk and IBM Plex Mono. Free-hand CapCut headlines are where the magenta script, the two clipped headlines and the four separate type treatments across twelve tiles came from.
The accent never decorates, and it is the rule a week of drift can break: no accent border, no accent glow, no accent heading, and if nothing in the frame is done there is no accent in the frame.
This entry said green until 13 September 2026, by which time it was naming a colour the direction had stopped using. The accent hue moved, the reason sits beside it in the token file, and the rule is written about the accent rather than about a hue so that it cannot go stale the next time the ramp moves.
Magenta, the lilac banner, the brush-script COACH KELV ring and the AI peacock are retired on the same day, along with PROJECT CONTROL wherever it still stands. The violet stays and goes down to one value.
Two hashtags came off this list on 13 September because you had already dealt with them. It asked you to retire #fiberopticfitness and #projectcontrol, and counted against your own 1,194 posts you last used them on 30 July and 26 July 2026. Asking a man to stop doing something he stopped six weeks ago is the kind of error that makes him doubt the rest of the page, so they are gone from the ask and recorded here instead. PROJECT CONTROL in the bio link is worded as wherever it still stands, because nothing in this build measured your bio link and we are not going to tell you what is on it. The violet is the one thing on this list that is not leaving, and it was on the list until the same morning, which had this direction retiring its own accent. Your account runs three of them today: a violet type colour, a magenta to violet gradient in the logo, and a lilac band. This sentence said three violets and a gradient until 13 September, which counts the gradient twice and makes four. This direction keeps the hue, because it is already yours and because not one of the thirteen measured competitors uses it, and takes the other two and the gradient away. So the change you would see in your own grid is one violet where there were three, not a colour going dark. #fiberopticfitness runs to 307 uses in 2026, counted across your own posts, where posts and occurrences both come to 307 because no post uses the tag twice.
Before and afters keep running but stop being the hero: they become numbered, dated client cards on the dark ground, and not one ships until written consent exists from that man.
No consent is recorded for anybody, so they are out of the day-one kit. This entry called the ground black until 13 September 2026, and the ground this direction runs is not black.
